IndiGo’s Q2 Performance: Strong Airfares Expected to Drive Profit Surge
InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, is poised for a significant profitability boost in the second quarter, driven by robust airfares that could offset rising fuel costs.
Profitability Outlook Amid Rising Costs
According to Elara Securities, IndiGo is projected to report an adjusted PAT of ₹8.6 billion for the second quarter of FY27, a substantial increase from ₹3.1 billion in the same quarter last year and a recovery from a loss of ₹1.6 billion in the previous quarter. The reported PAT, which includes foreign exchange losses, is anticipated to be around ₹5.8 billion.
The surge in profitability is attributed to a forecasted 35% year-on-year increase in airfares, which is expected to effectively counterbalance a significant 52% rise in unit fuel costs. This dynamic highlights the airline’s ability to navigate through challenging economic conditions while maintaining pricing power.
Passenger Load Factor and Traffic Trends
Despite the positive outlook on profitability, IndiGo is facing headwinds in passenger volume growth. The passenger load factor (PLF) is estimated to be 80.1% for the September quarter, down from 82.5% a year ago, primarily due to a decline in international PLF. Domestic aviation traffic is also expected to see a 6% year-on-year decline, a worsening trend compared to a 2% decline in the previous quarter.
This decline is attributed to a shrinking fleet among Tata Group airlines and SpiceJet, alongside IndiGo’s decision to return older, higher-cost leased aircraft. Regulatory and industry data indicates that the operating fleet size of Tata Group airlines has decreased by 13% year-on-year, further constraining capacity in the domestic market.
Airfare Dynamics in a Challenging Environment
Elara estimates that domestic airfares have risen by 32% year-on-year due to escalating fuel costs, a weakening rupee, and reduced industry capacity. This increase in airfares is crucial in offsetting the rising fuel costs in Q2FY27. On the international front, IndiGo’s airfares have surged by 47% year-on-year, which has helped mitigate the impact of a staggering 142% rise in international aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs, despite a 7% decline in international traffic amid geopolitical tensions.
Long-Term Outlook and Market Sentiment
Despite the challenges, Elara maintains a positive outlook on IndiGo’s long-term prospects, citing the resilience of India’s aviation demand cycle and constrained competitive supply. The brokerage believes that IndiGo is well-positioned to benefit from the recent airfare hikes, suggesting that the stock may not fully reflect the positive impact of supply-driven fare strength.
As of mid-afternoon trading, IndiGo shares were up 1.8% at ₹5,023.15 on the Bombay Stock Exchange, reflecting investor optimism regarding the airline’s performance in the upcoming quarter.
