Reliance Industries Gains 3% as Jio IPO Sparks Value Unlocking

Reliance Industries Shares Surge as Jio IPO Announcement Fuels Market Optimism

The announcement of Jio Platforms’ upcoming IPO has sparked renewed interest in Reliance Industries, leading to a notable uptick in its share price.

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) shares experienced a significant boost, rising over 2% in Tuesday’s trading session, driven by investor enthusiasm surrounding the impending IPO of Jio Platforms. The stock opened at ₹1,188.10 and climbed to an intraday high of ₹1,219.10 on the NSE, reflecting a 2.7% increase. By 2:08 PM, RIL shares were trading at ₹1,215, marking an increase of approximately 2.47%. In contrast, the benchmark Nifty 50 index rose by 0.77% to 22,728.75.

Jio IPO: A Catalyst for Value Unlocking

The surge in RIL’s stock price follows reports that Jio Platforms plans to launch its initial public offering on October 19, aiming to raise nearly $4 billion. This potential IPO is seen as a significant opportunity for value unlocking within Reliance Industries, which has long been viewed as a holding company with a discount due to its diverse business interests.

Vishnu Kant Upadhyay, AVP of research at Master Capital Services, emphasized that the fresh issuance of approximately 2.93% of total equity could facilitate price discovery for Jio, potentially narrowing the holding-company discount on RIL. He noted that the stock’s future movement will hinge on several factors, including the IPO valuation of Jio, the quality of subscription, and the resilience of earnings in Reliance’s oil-to-chemicals and retail segments amid crude price volatility.

Valuation Insights and Market Expectations

According to reports, Jio Platforms is targeting a valuation of around ₹11 trillion ($114 billion) for its IPO. Sunny Agrawal, deputy vice president of fundamental research at SBI Securities, projected that Reliance’s fair value could range between ₹1,600 and ₹1,700 per share, factoring in Jio’s contribution estimated at ₹450–500 per share after accounting for the holding-company discount.

While the short-term chart structure appears negative, the stock has begun a bounce-back rally from lower support levels. However, this rally may encounter resistance in the ₹1,280–₹1,340 range, suggesting that investors should remain cautious as the stock approaches these levels.
