HRA Exemption Calculator
The FinBrooks HRA Exemption Calculator helps salaried employees
estimate the amount of House Rent Allowance that may qualify for
exemption under the applicable HRA rules.
What is HRA exemption?
House Rent Allowance, or HRA, is a salary component provided by
employers to eligible employees. Subject to applicable conditions,
a portion of HRA may be exempt from taxable income when the employee
lives in rented accommodation.
How is HRA exemption calculated?
The commonly used calculation considers the least of the actual HRA
received, rent paid minus 10% of eligible basic salary, and the
prescribed percentage of basic salary based on whether the accommodation
is in a specified metro city or another location.
What is the 50% and 40% HRA rule?
For the simplified calculation used here, the city component is
50% of basic salary for the selected metro option and 40% for the
non-metro option. The applicable rules and eligible salary components
should be verified for an actual tax return.
What happens if rent is less than 10% of basic salary?
When rent paid does not exceed 10% of the relevant basic salary,
the rent-minus-10%-basic component can become zero or negative.
In that situation, the corresponding HRA exemption under this
calculation becomes zero.
Can I claim HRA exemption without paying rent?
HRA exemption generally requires actual rent payment and satisfaction
of the applicable conditions. This calculator assumes that the rent
entered represents actual eligible rent paid.

constitute tax advice. Actual HRA exemption depends on applicable
income-tax provisions, salary structure, eligible salary components,
rent paid, location and individual circumstances. Verify the result
against current official tax rules or with a qualified tax professional
before filing a tax return.
