Global Risks Push Foreign Investors to Short Indian Markets

Foreign Investors Turn Bearish on Indian Markets Amid Global Uncertainties

As global risks escalate, foreign investors are increasingly cautious about the Indian markets, with short positions dominating their strategies.

Overseas investors are adopting a bearish stance on Indian equities, reflecting concerns over global economic signals and geopolitical tensions.

Foreign Institutional Investors’ Sentiment Dips

Recent data indicates that foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have adopted their most bearish outlook on Indian markets in over two months. The long-short ratio, which measures the balance of long versus short positions in index futures, has plummeted to just 8%—the lowest since late July. This shift underscores a significant lack of confidence among foreign investors regarding the growth prospects of Indian equities.

The Nifty index has reacted accordingly, closing down 0.9% at 22,421.95, marking a 14.25% decline year-to-date. This downturn has prompted a staggering outflow of ₹2.69 trillion from Indian equity markets, as foreign investors reassess their positions amid a backdrop of rising global risks.

Global Factors Influencing Market Sentiment

Analysts attribute this bearish sentiment to several global factors, including the ongoing US-Iran conflict, rising Brent crude oil prices, and increasing US Treasury yields. These elements create a challenging environment for investors, diminishing the attractiveness of Indian equities as a viable investment option.

Chandan Taparia, head of technical and derivatives research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, noted that while the Nifty is currently in oversold territory, a sustained recovery is unlikely without new positive catalysts. The prevailing macroeconomic conditions, including a weaker rupee and elevated crude prices, continue to deter FIIs from reversing their short positions.

Market Outlook and Technical Analysis

Despite the bearish sentiment, some analysts suggest that the Nifty could experience a bounce-back rally towards the 22,800-22,850 range, particularly as it approaches key structural support levels between 22,180 and 21,740. Vipin Kumar from Globe Capital Market emphasized the potential for a reversal pattern to emerge, which could restore bullish momentum if a solid base forms around these support levels.

However, the prevailing conditions suggest that any upward movement may be met with selling pressure, as investors remain cautious. The Nifty is expected to trade within a range of 22,200 to 22,750 in the near term, with any rallies likely to encounter resistance.
