FPI Outflows ₹1 Trillion in H1FY27; Financials, Oil & Gas Under Pressure

Foreign Portfolio Investors Withdraw Over ₹1 Trillion in H1FY27, Sparking Sectoral Shifts

The significant outflow of foreign portfolio investments signals a cautious approach from global investors amid changing market dynamics.

The first half of the financial year 2026-27 (H1FY27) has seen foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) pulling out over ₹1 trillion from Indian markets. This trend highlights a selective withdrawal, with certain sectors experiencing more pressure than others. Financial services, oil and gas, and automobiles have been particularly hard hit, while sectors like services and consumer durables have attracted investment. The ongoing volatility in global markets and domestic economic conditions continues to shape investor sentiment.

Sectoral Impact of FPI Outflows

The data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) reveals that FPIs have been net sellers in four out of the six months in H1FY27, with a notable outflow of ₹35,861 crore in September alone. Financial services have suffered the most, with outflows amounting to ₹47,030 crore, followed by the oil and gas sector at ₹33,359 crore. The automobile sector also faced significant withdrawals of ₹22,507 crore, while FMCG and telecommunications saw outflows of ₹16,876 crore and ₹16,861 crore, respectively. This trend indicates a broader concern regarding liquidity and growth expectations within these sectors.

A Shift Towards Resilient Sectors

Conversely, sectors such as services, consumer durables, and consumer services have emerged as attractive investment destinations for FPIs, collectively witnessing inflows of ₹14,237 crore, ₹11,409 crore, and ₹10,504 crore, respectively. Rajesh Singla, CEO and Fund Manager at Alpha AMC, notes that these sectors offer better earnings visibility and are benefiting from resilient domestic demand. The formalisation of the economy and consumption trends further bolster their appeal, making them safer bets in uncertain times.

Factors Influencing FPI Sentiment

The current FPI outflows are largely attributed to a combination of high US yields, a strong dollar, and elevated crude prices, which have made India’s valuation less attractive compared to other emerging markets. Ajit Mishra, SVP – Research at Religare Broking, emphasizes that foreign investors are reallocating rather than abandoning India, as they reassess risk-reward scenarios in light of these macroeconomic factors. The expectation is that these selling cycles may persist for a few quarters until valuations stabilize and the global economic backdrop improves.

Future Outlook for FPI Flows

Looking ahead, analysts suggest that FPIs could return to Indian markets if global conditions become more favorable. A moderation in US yields, a decline in dollar strength, and lower crude prices could significantly enhance India’s external balances and inflation outlook. However, a recent note from Bernstein expresses skepticism regarding a substantial return of FPIs, indicating that while they may engage in trading Indian equities, long-term investment remains uncertain due to the challenges faced by large-cap stocks and the disruption of incumbent business models.

Key Highlights

  • FPI outflows exceeded ₹1 trillion in H1FY27, with significant withdrawals from financials and oil & gas sectors.
  • Financial services faced the largest outflows, totaling ₹47,030 crore.
  • Consumer durables and services sectors attracted substantial inflows, indicating a shift in investor preference.
  • Analysts suggest that favorable global cues could encourage FPIs to return to Indian markets.
  • Concerns over high US yields and a strong dollar continue to impact foreign investment sentiment.

Investor Note: The ongoing FPI outflows reflect a cautious stance among foreign investors, driven by macroeconomic factors and sector-specific dynamics. Investors should closely monitor global economic indicators and sector performance to navigate the evolving landscape.
