F&O Analyst Recommends Bull Spread Strategy for Hero MotoCorp, PNB

Defined-Risk Call Spreads Put Two Stocks in Focus

The recommended trades cap potential losses while giving investors a way to participate in further gains in Hero MotoCorp and PNB.

An analyst at HDFC Securities has recommended bull call spreads in Hero MotoCorp and Punjab National Bank (PNB) for the November 23 expiry. Both strategies involve buying a call option and selling a higher-strike call, limiting the initial cost and defining the maximum possible loss.

Two bullish trades, with different risk profiles

For Hero MotoCorp, the recommendation is to buy the November 23 expiry ₹5,600 call at ₹89 and sell the ₹5,700 call at ₹58. With a lot size of 150, the net premium is ₹31 per share, or ₹4,650 for the lot. That amount is also the stated maximum loss if the stock closes at or below ₹5,600 at expiry. The strategy’s breakeven is ₹5,631, and its maximum profit is ₹10,350 if the stock closes at or above ₹5,700.

The PNB spread uses a ₹127 call bought at ₹2.90 and a ₹130 call sold at ₹1.70. The ₹1.20 net premium, multiplied by the 8,000-share lot, gives a maximum loss of ₹9,600. The breakeven is ₹128.20; the maximum profit is ₹14,400 if PNB closes at or above ₹130. The cited approximate margins are ₹29,000 for Hero MotoCorp and ₹1,87,000 for PNB.

What the technical rationale says

The two recommendations are supported by different derivatives signals. In Hero MotoCorp futures, the analyst cites falling open interest alongside a 3% price rise, a pattern described as short covering. The stock is also said to be above its five- and 11-day exponential moving averages, to have broken a downward-sloping trendline on daily charts, and to show rising momentum indicators above 50.

For PNB, the cited futures signal is a long build-up: open interest and price rose together, with the price gaining 3%. The analyst also points to the stock trading above its short-term averages, a higher-top, higher-bottom pattern on weekly charts, and momentum readings above 50. These are the analyst’s technical observations, not a guarantee that either share will reach the spread’s upper strike.

A capped payoff still carries execution risk

A bull call spread is a net-debit strategy: the trader pays for the lower-strike call and offsets part of that cost by selling a higher-strike call. The sold option limits the spread’s upside, but it also reduces the premium outlay compared with buying the lower-strike call alone. The maximum loss is defined by the net premium paid, while the maximum gain depends on the share price finishing at or above the higher strike at expiry.

The stated risk-reward ratios are 1:2.23 for Hero MotoCorp and 1:1.5 for PNB. Those figures describe the payoff at expiry under the quoted entry premiums; they do not predict the probability of success. Option prices and the ability to execute both legs at the indicated premiums can affect the outcome. The analyst advises booking profit once return on investment exceeds 20%.

Key Highlights

  • Hero MotoCorp spread: ₹5,600/₹5,700 calls; maximum loss ₹4,650 and maximum profit ₹10,350.
  • PNB spread: ₹127/₹130 calls; maximum loss ₹9,600 and maximum profit ₹14,400.
  • The breakeven levels are ₹5,631 for Hero MotoCorp and ₹128.20 for PNB.
  • The analyst cites short covering in Hero MotoCorp futures and a long build-up in PNB futures.
  • The suggested profit-booking trigger is when ROI exceeds 20%.

Investor Note: These are short-dated derivatives strategies based on the analyst’s stated technical view, not assured returns. Investors should assess the maximum loss, required margin and expiry payoff before trading, and should not treat the cited risk-reward ratios as a measure of the likelihood of profit.
