PSU Banks Rally 4%: Bank of India, PNB, Indian Bank, IOB

Public Sector Banks Surge as Business Performance Impresses Investors

The rally in public sector bank shares signals growing investor confidence following robust quarterly results.

Public sector banks have garnered significant attention today, with the Nifty PSU Bank index climbing 2% on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). This uptick follows positive quarterly results from major players like Indian Bank, Bank of India, and Bank of Baroda, which reported solid business growth for the quarter ended September 2026 (Q2FY27).

Strong Performance Across the Board

At 10:23 AM, the Nifty PSU Bank index emerged as the top gainer among sectoral indices, outperforming the Nifty 50, which rose by only 0.44%. Key players such as Bank of India, Punjab National Bank (PNB), Indian Overseas Bank, Indian Bank, and Bank of Baroda saw their shares increase between 2% and 4%. Other banks like Canara Bank and State Bank of India (SBI) also recorded modest gains of around 1%.

Key Drivers of Growth

The positive momentum in PSU banks can be attributed to impressive quarterly results. Indian Bank reported a 16.6% year-on-year (YoY) increase in gross advances, reaching ₹7.23 trillion, alongside a 12.4% YoY growth in total deposits to ₹8.73 trillion. Notably, the bank’s retail, agriculture, and MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) advances surged by 17.8% YoY, reflecting strong demand in these segments.

Similarly, Bank of Baroda’s global advances grew by 18.3% YoY, while domestic advances increased by 13.5% YoY. The bank’s deposit mobilization also outpaced advances, leading to a healthier domestic credit-deposit (CD) ratio, which is crucial for maintaining balance sheet strength.

Market Sentiment and Future Outlook

Motilal Oswal Financial Services has projected a 27% YoY growth in profit after tax (PAT) for PSU banks in Q2FY27, driven by robust business expansion and potential gains from stake sales at SBI and Bank of Baroda. The brokerage also anticipates a net interest income (NII) growth of 10.8% YoY, supported by resilient net interest margins.

Despite the positive outlook, challenges remain, including muted treasury gains due to elevated bond yields and a declining recovery rate from the write-off pool. However, the overall asset quality outlook for PSU banks is stable, with benign credit costs expected to persist.
