Vishal Mega Mart Faces Margin Pressure Amid Festive Shift in Q2 Results
The shift in festive buying patterns has weighed heavily on Vishal Mega Mart’s margins, leading to a notable decline in its stock price.
Stock Performance and Market Reaction
Shares of Vishal Mega Mart fell by 6% on Wednesday following the announcement of its Q2 results for the fiscal year 2027. The stock opened at ₹94.98 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) but quickly lost momentum, hitting an intraday low of ₹86.55 before recovering slightly to ₹89.79 by early afternoon. This decline reflects investor concerns over the company’s margins and same-store sales growth (SSSG), which were adversely affected by a shift in festive buying patterns.
Q2 Financial Highlights
In its latest financial report, Vishal Mega Mart posted a consolidated net profit of ₹157.9 crore, marking a 3.7% increase year-on-year. However, the profit margin contracted to 4.6% from 5.1% in the previous quarter, indicating pressure on profitability. Revenue from operations rose by 14% to ₹3,398.5 crore, up from ₹2,981.5 crore in the same quarter last year, showcasing the company’s ability to grow sales despite margin challenges.
Impact of Festive Shift on Margins and SSSG
The company attributed the margin contraction to operational deleverage resulting from a shift in festive buying from the second quarter to the third quarter. This shift is expected to impact SSSG by approximately 1.5% to 2%. As a result, the reported SSSG stood at 7.7% for Q2FY27, but adjusting for the festive shift, it could have been around 9.5%. This highlights the potential for stronger sales performance in the upcoming quarter as the festive season aligns with consumer spending.
Expansion and New Initiatives
Despite the challenges, Vishal Mega Mart continues to expand its footprint, adding 53 gross and 49 net stores during the September quarter, bringing its total to 844 stores across 582 cities. The company also launched its first pilot store of ‘Belong & Co.,’ a new apparel format targeting young, affluent urban consumers. This initiative reflects the company’s strategy to diversify its offerings and attract a broader customer base.
