TCS Q2 Results: Analysts Flag Weak Margins Amid Growth, Shares Up 4%

TCS Q2 Results Highlight Growth Amid Margin Concerns

Despite a solid revenue increase, TCS faces scrutiny over its margins, leading to mixed analyst sentiments.

TCS’s Q2FY27 results reveal a blend of revenue growth and ongoing margin pressures, prompting a cautious outlook from analysts. While some brokerages maintain optimistic ratings, concerns about profitability persist amid rising costs and selective client spending.

Revenue Growth with Margin Pressures

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a net profit of ₹13,884 crore for Q2FY27, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 14.9% from ₹12,075 crore in Q2FY26. Revenue rose by 11.2% to ₹73,188 crore, surpassing Bloomberg estimates of ₹73,108 crore. However, the company’s margins have come under pressure, with EBIT margins remaining flat at 24% due to increased subcontracting costs and investments in strategic areas.

Analysts from various brokerages have expressed mixed views on the results. Nomura noted that while TCS’s revenue was slightly above expectations, the flat year-on-year deal wins and ongoing scrutiny on discretionary spending signal potential challenges ahead. The brokerage has reduced its earnings per share estimate for FY27 by 2.6% due to anticipated lower profit margins.

Analyst Ratings and Outlook

Brokerages have varied in their responses to TCS’s performance. Motilal Oswal maintained a ‘Buy’ rating, citing a total contract value (TCV) increase to $9.6 billion and constructive client conversations. However, they have also lowered profit margin estimates for FY27 and FY28 by 40 and 20 basis points, respectively, highlighting the impact of ongoing investments in AI capabilities and higher subcontracting costs.

Conversely, Nirmal Bang expressed concerns over TCS’s weak order-book momentum and flat EBIT margins, which fell below consensus estimates. They indicated that continued investment-related headwinds could persist, particularly with the ongoing scrutiny of discretionary spending.

Market Reaction and Future Prospects

Following the results, TCS shares saw an uptick, climbing to an intraday high of ₹2,193, reflecting a 5.6% increase. As of 09:19 AM, shares were trading at ₹2,147, up 3.44%, even as the benchmark Nifty 50 index declined by 0.49%. This positive market reaction may be attributed to TCS’s resilience in securing deals and the ongoing demand for AI services, which now constitute 10% of total revenues.

However, analysts caution that the near-term outlook remains contingent on pipeline conversion and a recovery in regional markets. The company’s ability to navigate the challenges posed by rising costs and selective client spending will be critical in sustaining growth momentum.
