Stock Indices Pare Early Losses as Realty Shares Decline

Equity Indices Recover Slightly as Realty Shares Continue to Struggle

Despite early losses, equity indices showed signs of recovery, although realty shares continued to face significant declines.

The Indian equity markets experienced a mixed morning session, with the key indices paring early losses but still trading in the red. The Nifty 50 index fell below the 23,400 mark, while the S&P BSE Sensex recorded a decline of 73.38 points, or 0.09%, settling at 74,708.38. The Nifty 50 index also saw a dip of 37.70 points, or 0.16%, to reach 23,362.25.

Realty Sector Faces Continued Pressure

The Nifty Realty index has been a notable underperformer, declining for the seventh consecutive session, down 1.79% to 833.30. This marks a staggering 9.33% drop over the past week. Major players in the sector, including Godrej Properties, Aditya Birla Real Estate, and DLF, saw their shares fall significantly, contributing to the index’s woes.

Godrej Properties led the decline with a drop of 3.23%, followed closely by Aditya Birla Real Estate at 2.72% and Prestige Estates Projects at 2.56%. The ongoing downturn in the real estate sector raises concerns about demand and pricing, particularly as inflation pressures mount.

Broader Market Trends

In the broader market, the BSE 150 MidCap Index fell by 0.70%, while the BSE 250 SmallCap Index recorded a 0.75% decline. The overall market breadth was negative, with 1,499 shares advancing against 2,494 shares declining, indicating a challenging environment for investors.

This negative sentiment is compounded by rising inflation figures released by India’s Ministry of Statistics. Consumer price inflation rose to 4.82% in August, up from 4.45% in July, putting additional pressure on the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to consider raising interest rates. Food inflation also saw an uptick, climbing to 5.95% from 5.52% in the previous month.
