SIF AUM Soars to ₹40,000 Crore: Which Investors Should Invest Now?

SIF AUM Surges to ₹40,000 Crore: Who Should Consider Investing?

The remarkable growth of Specialised Investment Funds (SIFs) signals a shift in investment strategies for Indian investors.

SIFs have seen a meteoric rise in assets under management, reaching nearly ₹40,000 crore within a year of their launch. This growth reflects a growing appetite for sophisticated investment strategies among Indian investors.

SIFs: A New Investment Paradigm

Since their introduction in October 2025, SIFs have attracted significant inflows, with ₹7,600 crore coming in just September 2026, accounting for nearly 20% of total equity investments. This surge indicates a shift in investor behavior, as more individuals seek investment vehicles that provide flexibility and adaptability to changing market conditions.

Radhika Gupta, MD and CEO of Edelweiss Mutual Fund, highlights this evolution, emphasizing the need for strategies that align with increasingly sophisticated investor portfolios. However, she also points out the challenge of educating investors about how these funds fit into their long-term financial plans.

Identifying the Right Investors for SIFs

SIFs are primarily designed for high-net-worth individuals (HNIs), family offices, and seasoned investors who already possess a diversified mutual fund portfolio. With a minimum investment threshold of ₹10 lakh, these funds are not for everyone. Financial planner Vikas Yadav suggests that investors should ideally have a corpus of at least ₹70 lakh before considering SIFs, and recommends limiting SIF exposure to 15-20% of their overall portfolio based on individual risk tolerance.

Investment Horizon: A Critical Factor

The suitability of SIFs also hinges on the investor’s time horizon. For those with goals within a year, experts like Yadav advise against investing in SIFs, recommending fixed deposits instead. For goals set 12-18 months out, hybrid arbitrage SIFs may be appropriate, while hybrid equity savings SIFs could be suitable for a two to three-year horizon, provided investors can handle moderate market fluctuations.

Sandeep Seth, founder of SIF360, echoes this sentiment, suggesting that selected hybrid SIFs may be viable for a two to three-year investment horizon, depending on their asset allocation and volatility. However, he stresses the importance of prioritizing capital stability and liquidity for shorter-term goals.

Choosing the Right SIF Scheme

When selecting a SIF, investors should not rely solely on short-term performance metrics due to the limited historical data available. Yadav emphasizes the importance of evaluating the fund manager’s track record, the investment strategy employed, and the flexibility offered to the manager. Additionally, factors such as expense ratios, derivative exposure, and redemption conditions should be taken into account.

Seth highlights the relevance of hybrid SIFs in the current equity market environment, where volatility and valuation concerns necessitate a more flexible approach to asset allocation. These funds can provide active risk management and differentiated return potential, making them a valuable addition to an investor’s portfolio.
