Indian Markets Face Significant Decline Amid Bank Stock Weakness and FPI Selling
The Indian stock market experienced a sharp downturn on Monday, reversing a two-day buying trend as investor sentiment soured due to a combination of factors, including disappointing bank earnings and rising oil prices.
Banking Sector Faces Pressure
The decline in the banking sector was a significant contributor to the market’s downturn. Major private banks, including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank, reported disappointing quarterly results, leading to a selloff. Collectively, these banks accounted for over 50% of the selling pressure on the Sensex. HDFC Bank’s shares fell nearly 3% amid concerns regarding management transitions, while Axis Bank’s mixed results resulted in a 5% drop, as analysts expressed concerns over its core fundamentals.
Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) Pull Back
The selling pressure was exacerbated by a surge in foreign portfolio investor (FPI) selling, which reached a six-month high in October. With a total outflow of ₹52,100 crore this month alone, FPIs have been increasingly cautious, especially amid rising crude oil prices. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has highlighted capital outflows as a significant risk for the Indian economy, particularly as FPIs have sold a staggering ₹3.12 trillion this year.
Elevated Oil Prices Impacting Market Sentiment
Despite a slight decline, oil prices remain elevated, hovering around $108 per barrel. The recent spike in crude prices, driven by geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions, poses macroeconomic risks for India, impacting the current account deficit and putting pressure on the domestic currency. Analysts warn that sustained high oil prices could further dampen investor sentiment and economic growth prospects.
Technical Outlook Suggests Caution
Technical analysts are advising caution, noting that the current market lacks broad participation and is facing significant overhead resistance. The Nifty index is encountering immediate resistance in the 23,250-23,300 range, with stronger resistance at 23,450-23,500. Conversely, support levels are seen around 23,050-23,000, suggesting a precarious balance for investors.
