Nifty Smallcap Looks Stronger Than Midcap Index, Could Hit New High: Analysts

Small-Cap Index Nears a Breakout Test as Mid-Caps Rebound

The recovery has lifted both indices, but analysts see a clearer technical trigger in small-caps.

The Nifty Smallcap 250 has recovered from its October low and is holding near its long-term 200-day moving average, while the Nifty Midcap 150 remains below its calendar-year high. Analysts see scope for further gains in both indices, with small-caps facing a key resistance zone that could determine whether the recovery develops into a fresh high.

A recovery, but neither index has reclaimed its peak

The Nifty Midcap 150 and Nifty Smallcap 250 have risen 5.8% and 6.2%, respectively, from their October lows. At the quoted levels, however, the Midcap index remained about 9% below its calendar-year high of 23,647.50, while the Smallcap index was 7.6% below its peak of 18,551. On Tuesday, the indices gained 0.8% to 21,487 and 0.7% to 17,108, respectively.

The technical picture offers different reference points for the two segments. The Midcap 150 was testing its 20-day moving average near 21,400, while the Smallcap 250 was hovering around its 200-day moving average at 16,950. These levels help frame the recovery, but they do not by themselves confirm that either index has resumed a sustained advance.

Mid-caps have support below and resistance ahead

Bajaj Broking’s Pabitro Mukherjee describes the Midcap index as moving within a rising channel over the past two years. He says its recent rebound followed support at the channel’s lower band and the 144-week exponential moving average, pointing to a longer-term support area rather than a guarantee of further gains.

Mukherjee expects the index to hold above 20,000–19,500, where the 144-week average, a retracement level and the channel’s lower band converge. If that support holds, he sees potential to move towards 22,500 and 23,600 over the coming months. HDFC Securities’ Nandish Shah identifies 20,700 as a key downside support and 21,900 as a possible upside level; he also flags 21,300 as near-term resistance. The differing reference levels reflect analyst assessments, not assured targets.

Near-term trading may also become more active as mid-cap companies prepare to announce results during the week. That could bring company-specific earnings into focus alongside the broader chart setup.

Small-caps need to clear a tightly watched threshold

Shah considers the Smallcap index better placed on the charts than its mid-cap counterpart. He points to resistance at 17,150–17,200: a move above that range, in his assessment, could open the way for a sharp advance and a potential attempt at new highs. He identifies a fall below 15,880 as a trend-reversal signal.

Mukherjee sees the recent decline approaching maturity after the index rebounded from its 100-week EMA and the 50% retracement of the move from 14,143 to 18,551. He also highlights a higher bottom on the long-term chart, despite profit booking after the index tested its previous all-time high in August. His support zone is 15,500–16,200, with possible upside levels of 18,000 and 18,700.

Key Highlights

  • From October lows, the Midcap 150 has gained 5.8% and the Smallcap 250 has gained 6.2%.
  • The Midcap index’s cited support zone is 20,000–19,500; Shah also identifies 20,700 as a key support.
  • For small-caps, 17,150–17,200 is the breakout resistance identified by Shah.
  • Analyst upside levels extend to 23,600 for mid-caps and 18,700 for small-caps over the coming months.
  • A break below the cited support zones would weaken the technical recovery case.
