Nifty Faces Longest Losing Streak Since 2001 Amid Rising Oil Prices
The Nifty 50 index’s prolonged decline signals investor caution as global economic pressures mount.
Nifty’s Eight-Week Slide Explained
The Nifty 50 index fell for the eighth consecutive week, closing at 22,421.95, down 0.88% from the previous close. This marks the worst weekly performance since March, with the index losing 3.1% over the week. The decline is largely attributed to rising Brent crude prices, which have heightened concerns about inflation and economic growth. The index has shed 8.7% since its August 7 close of 24,570.65, while the BSE Sensex has also recorded a similar decline.
Sector Performance Under Pressure
Automobile and metal stocks were among the hardest hit, with the Nifty Auto and Nifty Metal indices falling 3.46% and 2.35%, respectively. The automotive sector’s struggles are evident in the latest sales data, which showed a significant slowdown in growth. For instance, Mahindra & Mahindra reported a 14% drop in SUV sales compared to a 50% rise in August, while Bajaj Auto’s sales fell by 12%.
The rising cost of crude oil is exacerbating the situation, as higher fuel prices could lead to increased interest rates, further impacting vehicle financing. Additionally, the Nifty Media and Nifty Cement indices also faced declines of 2.33% and 2.3%, respectively, while the broader market indices, including the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100, underperformed the benchmark.
Geopolitical Factors and Market Sentiment
Analysts attribute the ongoing selloff to a combination of high US bond yields and geopolitical tensions, particularly relating to the US-Iran peace talks. Gaurav Sharma, head of research at Globe Capital, noted that the sustained high rates of US bond yields are prompting foreign institutional investors to offload Indian equities. This trend is likely to continue until there is a reversal in US bond yields, which could provide some respite to emerging markets, including India.
Ambareesh Baliga, an independent market analyst, highlighted that adverse news regarding crude oil and rising interest rates, coupled with a depreciating rupee, has created a challenging environment for investors. The influx of initial public offerings (IPOs) has also siphoned off liquidity from the market, further complicating the situation.
Tata Group Stocks Under Scrutiny
Adding to the market’s woes, Tata group stocks have come under pressure due to ongoing governance issues within Tata Sons. Recent developments in the tussle between trustees and management have raised concerns about the company’s future direction. Baliga noted that the current situation is more precarious than previous governance challenges faced by the group, as it involves deeper internal conflicts.
