Private Banks Outpace the Market as Large Lenders Rally
A broad advance in private-bank shares puts credit growth, margins and asset quality back in focus.
The Nifty Private Bank index gained 2% in Tuesday’s intraday trade, outperforming the Nifty 50, which rose 1.1%. HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank led the advance, while recent foreign portfolio investor inflows and brokerage views on the lenders’ outlook added context to the move.
Private lenders lead the day’s advance
The 2% rise in the Nifty Private Bank index was nearly twice the Nifty 50’s 1.1% gain at 2:22 p.m. HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank each climbed as much as 3% intraday, making the advance a large-lender-led move rather than a broad market rally.
The strength also extended beyond a single session. Over the previous five trading days, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank had gained 7% each, compared with a 5% rise in the Nifty 50. Foreign portfolio investors put ₹19,000 crore into the equity market over that period, according to the data cited. The figures show that bank shares advanced alongside strong market inflows, though they do not establish that flows alone drove the gains.
ICICI Bank’s growth remains strong, with margins to watch
JM Financial Services has a Buy rating on ICICI Bank and a target price of ₹1,710. Its assessment points to corporate and business banking credit growth, fee traction and asset quality as strengths. In Q2FY27, loans and deposits grew 30% and 27% year on year, respectively, aided by FCNR (B) mobilisation. Excluding that contribution, loan growth was 24%, led by business banking and domestic corporate demand.
The near-term qualification is net interest margin pressure linked to FCNR (B). Management expects margins to moderate further in Q3FY27, with recovery from Q4FY27 as surplus liquidity is deployed. The bank’s stated FY26–28E loan and deposit growth expectations of roughly 21% and 19% compound annually support the growth case, but investors will need to track whether that expansion translates into earnings without weakening margins or asset quality.
HDFC and Axis face different tests
For HDFC Bank, analysts at Axis Securities see Q2 margins near a trough and point to improving productivity and retail and MSME momentum as potential supports for a gradual earnings recovery. A stronger mix of higher-yielding loans and efforts to mobilise CASA deposits could help margins. The appointment of Anup Bagchi as managing director and chief executive addresses the leadership overhang, but the bank’s strategic direction on retail growth, deposits and margins remains important. Axis Securities retains a Buy rating with a ₹950 target price.
Axis Bank’s Q2FY27 profit of ₹7,000 crore, up 38% year on year, exceeded Jefferies’ estimates, helped by topline performance and lower provisions. Stable core margins and improving asset quality were positives, while FCNR-B remained a margin drag. Jefferies maintains a Buy rating and ₹1,700 target price, while flagging uncertainty around the potential impact on bancassurance fees. The differing drivers underline why a sector rally does not remove bank-specific execution and valuation risks.
