Heavy Trading Lifts MRPL as Refining Margins Draw Investor Focus
A sharp rally and unusually high turnover put MRPL’s recent earnings strength and near-term resistance levels in focus.
Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals shares climbed as much as 12% in a subdued market, with the stock among the NSE’s most active counters by volume and value. The move followed a strong Q2FY27 performance, while traders also weighed the outlook for refining margins and a key technical resistance zone.
A standout move backed by heavy turnover
MRPL opened around its previous level before gaining ground, reaching an intraday high of ₹182, up 12%. At 1:15 p.m., it was trading near ₹181, close to the session’s high. The rise stood out against a market described as listless, making the stock’s own trading activity a central feature of the session.
Nearly 80 million shares, valued at ₹1,387.19 crore, changed hands by the afternoon. MRPL ranked among the top three most active NSE stocks by both volume and value. Such turnover signals intense participation, but does not by itself establish whether investors are building longer-term positions or responding to short-term trading momentum.
Quarterly earnings put refining economics in focus
MRPL reported Q2FY27 revenue of ₹32,500 crore, a 43.6% increase year on year. Adjusted profit after tax rose to ₹2,019.5 crore from ₹6,274 million in Q2FY26. The figures provide a business backdrop to the renewed interest in the shares, although one strong quarter does not alone establish how earnings will perform across changing market conditions.
Choice Institutional Equities attributed the quarter’s performance to higher product realisations and sustained strength in middle-distillate cracks. It also noted that inventory gains supported profitability: EBITDA margin expanded 351 basis points year on year to 10.1%, while operational flexibility remained intact. These factors matter because refining earnings can be sensitive to the relationship between crude input costs and the prices realised for products.
The margin outlook is supportive, but conditional
The brokerage expects diesel prices to remain elevated through FY27 and sees seasonally higher petroleum-product demand during October–December, alongside relatively softer crude oil demand, as potential support for product cracks and gross refining margins. It expects elevated crack spreads to continue through the second half of FY27, which could support refining profitability.
That outlook is a forecast, not a confirmed outcome. The earnings case therefore depends on whether product realisations and refining spreads remain favourable. Choice maintained a Buy rating and an unchanged target price of ₹215; investors should treat that as the brokerage’s assessment rather than a guaranteed share-price destination.
₹184–185 is the near-term technical hurdle
SBI Securities’ technical view identifies ₹184–185 as a resistance zone that has held back the stock in recent sessions. A sustained move above ₹185, supported by strong volume, could open the way towards ₹190 and ₹200, according to the analyst. On the downside, ₹175–177 is seen as immediate support, followed by ₹170.
The distinction between an intraday surge and a decisive breakout is important: MRPL’s session high of ₹182 remained below that resistance band. The analyst described the near-term outlook as cautiously positive, with a clear move above ₹185 needed to strengthen the bullish setup. These levels are technical reference points, not assurances of where the stock will trade.

Investor Note: MRPL’s rally coincides with strong reported earnings and a supportive brokerage outlook for refining margins, but the share remains sensitive to changes in product cracks and the sustainability of those earnings drivers. Investors may wish to assess the company’s operating performance alongside the stock’s ability to hold gains and clear the cited resistance zone, rather than treating one high-volume session as confirmation of a lasting trend.
