KEC International Stock Falls 8% as Q2 Profit Drops 82%, Margins Contract

KEC International’s Earnings Slump Puts Execution and Margins Under Scrutiny

A sharp profit decline and weaker order inflows have raised questions about near-term execution, even as the company points to a substantial order pipeline.

KEC International’s September-quarter profit fell 82% year on year, while revenue and operating margins also declined. The results reflect execution challenges, cost pressure and higher interest and tax costs; the company says its order book and tender pipeline support the prospect of better performance in coming quarters.

Weak execution and cost pressure hit quarterly earnings

KEC International reported consolidated net profit of ₹30 crore for Q2FY27, down 82% from ₹161 crore a year earlier. Revenue fell 10.5% to ₹5,468 crore from ₹6,092 crore, with year-on-year declines across segments except Cables. The parallel fall in sales and profit indicates that the quarter’s weakness was not limited to the bottom line.

EBITDA declined to ₹271 crore from ₹430 crore, and the EBITDA margin contracted by more than 200 basis points to 5%. The company attributed the margin pressure mainly to employee costs and other expenses being higher as a share of sales than expected. PAT margin fell to 0.5% from 2.6%, leaving less profit from each rupee of revenue.

Brokerage analysis cited weaker execution, lower-than-expected margins and higher-than-expected interest costs and tax as additional factors behind the profit decline. Together, these pressures show why revenue recovery alone may not be enough: investors will also look for improved project execution and tighter cost absorption.

Project disruptions weighed on execution, while orders slowed

The company described a difficult operating environment, citing continuing geopolitical and supply-chain disruptions in the Middle East, right-of-way and land-acquisition challenges in India’s transmission and distribution business, and calibrated supplies on select projects amid elevated global costs. These issues can delay work or constrain the pace at which projects are executed, affecting revenue recognition and the absorption of operating costs.

Q2 order inflows fell 31% year on year to ₹7,230 crore. The closing order book stood at ₹40,000 crore, while the company reported an order book and L1 position of about ₹43,500 crore and a tender pipeline exceeding ₹2 trillion. The large pipeline offers potential visibility, but it is not the same as completed work or assured near-term revenue. Conversion into executable orders, and timely delivery, will matter.

First-half performance and debt add to the watchpoints

The weakness extended beyond the quarter. In 1HFY27, revenue declined 6% to ₹10,491 crore, EBITDA fell 28% to ₹562 crore and profit after tax dropped 64% to ₹102 crore. The PAT margin was 1%, compared with 2.6% in the corresponding first half a year earlier.

Net operating cash outflow was ₹400 crore in the first half, against an outflow of ₹9,200 crore in the same period last year. That is a substantial reduction in cash outflow, although the company still recorded a negative figure. Net debt, including acceptances, stood at ₹8,000 crore as of September 30, 2026. Cash generation and debt therefore remain important measures alongside reported earnings.

Shares fell despite a stronger benchmark

KEC International shares fell as much as nearly 8% in Tuesday’s trade, reaching ₹321.40, while the Nifty 50 was up 0.82% at 10 a.m. The stock was trading close to its reported 52-week low of ₹317.25. The divergence points to a company-specific reaction to the results rather than a broad-market decline, though one session does not establish the stock’s longer-term direction.

A technical analyst cited in the report described the stock as being in a downtrend and identified ₹350–355 as an immediate resistance zone. That assessment is conditional: the bearish view was expected to remain intact while the shares traded below that range. Investors should distinguish this technical view from the company’s operating outlook and track whether execution and margins improve.
