Indian Firms Raise Record $25 Billion Equity in H1 Despite Slump

Indian Companies Achieve Record $25 Billion in Equity Fundraising Amid Market Challenges

Despite a sluggish secondary market, Indian firms have raised a remarkable $25 billion in equity during the first half of fiscal 2027, signaling robust investor confidence and market resilience.

Indian companies raised a record 2.43 trillion rupees ($25.27 billion) in equity in H1 FY27, a 75% year-on-year increase, driven by strong domestic liquidity and a backlog of IPOs.

Strong Fundraising Despite Market Conditions

In a remarkable display of resilience, Indian firms raised a record 2.43 trillion rupees (approximately $25.27 billion) in equity during the first half of fiscal 2027, according to data from the PRIME Database Group. This figure marks a significant 75% increase compared to the same period last year, highlighting a strong appetite among domestic investors for fresh investment opportunities despite a challenging secondary market environment.

The average listing gains during this period also saw a substantial rise, jumping to 19% from just 7% in the previous year. This contrasts sharply with the benchmark Nifty 50 index, which only managed a modest 1.3% increase, indicating a clear divergence between primary market activities and secondary market performance.

Key IPOs Driving the Surge

Several high-profile initial public offerings (IPOs) contributed significantly to this fundraising boom. Notable among them were the National Stock Exchange’s (NSE) $2.3 billion IPO, which stands as the second-largest in Indian history, and SBI Funds Management’s $1.03 billion offering. Additionally, Manipal Health Enterprises raised $960 million, further underscoring the growing interest in equity markets.

The Indian market regulator’s decision to grant a one-time extension for IPOs that were delayed due to market volatility also played a crucial role in this surge. This extension allowed companies to capitalize on favorable conditions, leading to a record 942.05 billion rupees raised across 78 mainboard IPOs, a 35% increase over the previous record set in the first half of fiscal 2026.

Sectoral Opportunities and Government Divestments

Investors are increasingly looking for niche opportunities, with new listings emerging from sectors that are underrepresented on Indian exchanges. Companies like Rentomojo, LEAP India, and Asset Reconstruction Company (India) are among those tapping into these emerging market segments, providing investors with avenues to diversify their portfolios.

Additionally, the government’s ongoing divestment strategy has significantly boosted secondary stock offerings, which surged fivefold to 553.37 billion rupees. The Life Insurance Corporation of India’s (LIC) stake sale alone accounted for around 314 billion rupees, further illustrating the impact of government initiatives on market liquidity.

Outlook for the Second Half

Looking ahead, the momentum in fundraising is expected to continue, with nearly 250 companies poised to raise approximately 4.65 trillion rupees through upcoming IPOs. High-profile offerings on the horizon include Jio Platforms’ anticipated $3.8 billion IPO and entries from international players like Carlsberg and Oyo’s parent company, Prism.

Industry experts suggest that unless there are significant changes in global or domestic economic conditions, the current fundraising trend is likely to persist. Yatin Singh, CEO of Emkay Global Financial Services, emphasized that the underlying factors driving this activity remain robust, indicating a positive outlook for the second half of the fiscal year.
