IFSCA Pilots Aadhaar Face Authentication to Streamline NRIs’ Cross-Border KYC

IFSCA Launches Aadhaar Face Authentication to Enhance NRI Investment Experience

The IFSCA’s initiative aims to simplify the KYC process for NRIs, potentially unlocking significant investment opportunities.

The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) is piloting unassisted Aadhaar face authentication with four international jurisdictions to simplify cross-border know your customer (KYC) process for non-resident Indians (NRIs), as it seeks to make Gujarat International Finance Tec (GIFT) City a platform for global wealth management, IFSCA chairman K Rajaraman said on Friday.

Streamlining the Onboarding Process

The IFSCA’s pilot program allows NRIs with an Aadhaar footprint to complete the onboarding process without assistance. This means that an investor located overseas can digitally open an account and begin investing without the need for physical documentation or courier services. “If the NRI has an Aadhaar footprint, he will be able to effortlessly get onboarded,” Rajaraman stated during the Global Fintech Fest. The goal is to create a fully digital onboarding experience that eliminates the need for paper and wet signatures.

Addressing Key Challenges for NRIs

Rajaraman emphasized that cross-border KYC and payment issues are critical hurdles that must be addressed to facilitate NRI investments through the GIFT City platform. By simplifying these processes, the IFSCA aims to attract a larger pool of overseas Indian investors, who remitted over $140 billion to India last year. The authority believes that a similar amount could be invested through global markets if the KYC process is streamlined.

Wealth Management Units to Cater to High-Net-Worth Individuals

In addition to the Aadhaar initiative, the IFSCA has urged banks operating in the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) to establish wealth-management units. Major banks, including HSBC and the State Bank of India, are already in the process of setting up these units to cater to high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) with global operations and family offices abroad. This move is expected to further enhance the investment landscape for NRIs and HNIs alike.

Projected Growth of the Banking Ecosystem

The banking ecosystem at GIFT IFSC is anticipated to expand significantly, with total assets projected to rise to approximately $200 billion by the end of the financial year, up from over $143 billion currently. Currently, 42 banks operate within the IFSC, including 21 foreign banks, indicating a robust and growing financial infrastructure.

Opportunities for Asset Financing

Rajaraman noted that the IFSC is increasingly becoming a hub for financing large assets, with Indian banks actively participating in loan syndicates. This growing comfort among lenders presents an opportunity for the IFSC to support the acquisition of significant assets, such as aircraft and ships, thereby enhancing its role in global finance.
