HDFC Bank Slips 1.5% Post Q2; Analysts: Worst Over, Eyes New CEO

HDFC Bank Faces Pressure Post Q2 Results as Analysts Anticipate Recovery

Despite a profit beat in its latest quarterly results, HDFC Bank’s shares slipped 1.5%, reflecting investor caution as the bank prepares for a leadership transition.

HDFC Bank reported a 4.7% year-on-year increase in net profit for Q2 FY27, but analysts suggest the worst may be over for the lender as it navigates a leadership change.

Quarterly Performance Overview

HDFC Bank’s Q2 FY27 results, released over the weekend, showcased a net profit of ₹19,510 crore, marking a 4.7% increase from the previous year. This performance was buoyed by a 9.7% rise in net interest income (NII) to ₹34,620 crore, driven by a robust 16.3% growth in gross advances. However, the bank faced challenges with a decline in other income and rising operating expenses, which tempered overall profit growth.

The net interest margin (NIM) stood at 3.16% of total assets, while provisions for the quarter were recorded at ₹3,570 crore, leading to a credit cost ratio of 0.44%. Despite these figures, retail deposit growth remained subdued at 11% year-on-year, trailing behind competitors like SBI and ICICI Bank.

Market Reaction and Analyst Insights

Following the earnings announcement, HDFC Bank’s shares fell to a low of ₹716.90, closing down 1.5% from the previous day. Analysts from Jefferies noted that while the profit exceeded expectations, the stock’s reaction reflects broader market sentiment and the uncertainty surrounding the bank’s upcoming leadership transition. The new MD & CEO is set to take charge in October, with analysts keenly observing how their strategy will address growth and margin improvement.

Elara Capital echoed similar sentiments, highlighting that while HDFC Bank is regaining momentum, the path to a sustained recovery is still unfolding. They emphasized the importance of the new CEO’s approach in balancing growth with margin enhancement, particularly as the bank’s return on assets (ROA) currently sits at 1.7%.

Future Outlook and Valuation Perspectives

Looking ahead, analysts have set target prices that reflect a cautious optimism. Jefferies has maintained a ‘Buy’ rating with a target price of ₹880, while Elara Capital’s target stands at ₹923, based on a sum-of-the-parts (SOTP) valuation. Dolat Capital has also expressed a favorable risk-reward outlook, assigning a target price of ₹940, despite a slight reduction due to lower market values of subsidiaries.

However, the brokerage cautioned that until a permanent replacement for DMD Kaizad Bharucha is appointed, there may be an overhang on the stock. The market will be closely watching for clarity on the new management structure and strategic direction, which could significantly impact investor sentiment and stock performance.
