Gold, Silver Slide as Crude Oil Rally Rekindles Rate-Hike Fears

Crude Oil Surge Fuels Concerns, Pressuring Gold and Silver Prices

As crude oil prices rise, inflation fears resurface, impacting precious metals.

Gold and silver prices have taken a hit as rising crude oil prices reignite concerns about inflation and potential interest rate hikes. The geopolitical tensions in West Asia, particularly attacks on oil tankers, have further exacerbated worries about global oil supply disruptions.

Market Overview: Precious Metals Under Pressure

On October 21, gold futures on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) were trading at approximately ₹1,46,100 per 10 grams, while silver futures were around ₹2,09,750 per kg. This decline in precious metals comes as crude oil prices have surged, leading to renewed inflation worries and speculation about further interest rate hikes by central banks.

In the global market, gold futures on Comex were trading near $4,140 per ounce, and silver was at $57.60 per ounce. The recent spike in crude oil prices has raised concerns among investors about the potential for increased inflation, which could prompt central banks to tighten monetary policy further.

Crude Oil’s Impact on Inflation Expectations

The recent rise in crude oil prices is largely attributed to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, particularly the attacks on oil tankers, which have raised fears of supply disruptions. This has led to a spike in oil prices, which traditionally correlates with inflationary pressures. As oil becomes more expensive, the costs of goods and services tend to rise, prompting concerns about the overall inflation outlook.

Higher inflation could lead central banks, including the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the US Federal Reserve, to consider further interest rate hikes to curb inflationary pressures. This potential tightening of monetary policy tends to negatively impact non-yielding assets like gold and silver, leading to a decrease in their prices.
