Gold, Silver Prices Surge as Traders Trim October Fed Rate Hike Bets

Gold and Silver Prices Climb as Fed Rate Hike Expectations Diminish

The recent surge in gold and silver prices reflects shifting market sentiments as traders reassess the likelihood of an imminent rate hike by the Federal Reserve.

Gold and silver prices have seen a notable increase as traders adjust their expectations regarding the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy, particularly following dovish comments from Chairman Kevin Warsh. The decline in crude oil prices has also contributed to easing inflation concerns, further bolstering the appeal of these precious metals.

Market Overview: Gold and Silver Prices Surge

On October 19, gold and silver prices rose significantly as traders scaled back their bets on a potential interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve. This shift in sentiment was largely influenced by Chairman Warsh’s recent comments, which hinted at a more cautious approach to monetary policy. In the global market, gold futures on the Comex were trading around $4,197.20 per ounce, while silver was priced at approximately $57.61 per ounce. In India, gold futures on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) were trading near ₹1,48,300 per 10 grams, and silver futures were at ₹2,12,370 per kg.

Factors Driving the Price Increase

The recent uptick in gold and silver prices can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the decline in crude oil prices has alleviated inflationary pressures, which traditionally bolster demand for gold as a safe-haven asset. Vikram Subburaj, CEO of Giottus.com, emphasized that lower crude prices could also ease pressure on the Indian rupee, further supporting gold and silver prices in the domestic market. Additionally, traders should be prepared for increased volatility in silver, which has historically experienced larger price fluctuations compared to gold.

Technical Analysis and Levels to Watch

According to Ajay Kedia, director of Kedia Advisory, gold is currently witnessing short covering, with open interest declining by 2.15% to 16,717 contracts as prices increased. Key support levels for gold are at ₹1,47,350 and ₹1,46,780, while resistance is observed at ₹1,48,660. If gold prices maintain above this resistance level, they could potentially rise towards ₹1,49,400. Similarly, silver is also experiencing short covering, with open interest down by 1.78% to 20,056 contracts. Silver’s support levels are at ₹2,09,930 and ₹2,08,670, with resistance at ₹2,13,220. A sustained move above this resistance could see silver prices approaching ₹2,15,250.

Global Market Dynamics

In the international market, gold and silver futures are also trending upwards. Comex gold opened at $4,185 per ounce, reflecting a slight increase from the previous closing price of $4,181.10. Silver futures opened at $57.13 per ounce, showing a modest rise as well. The overall sentiment in the global markets is leaning towards a more cautious approach to interest rates, which is likely to continue supporting precious metals in the near term.
