Gold and Silver Prices Decline Amid Strong Dollar and Rising US Bond Yields
The recent dip in gold and silver prices highlights the ongoing tug-of-war between currency strength and precious metal demand.
Market Dynamics: Strong Dollar and Bond Yields
On October 6, gold and silver prices fell sharply as the dollar strengthened against a basket of currencies, making precious metals more expensive for holders of other currencies. The surge in US bond yields, driven by expectations of tighter monetary policy, further diminished the appeal of non-yielding assets like gold and silver. Gold futures on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) were trading at approximately ₹1,49,300 per 10 grams, while silver was around ₹2,25,600 per kg.
In the global market, gold futures on the Comex were trading near $4,150 per ounce, reflecting a decline from previous highs. The recent employment data, which showed weaker job growth, typically supports gold prices; however, the current market sentiment has been dominated by the stronger dollar and rising yields.
Technical Analysis: Support and Resistance Levels
Ajay Kedia, director of Kedia Advisory, noted that gold is facing increased selling pressure from a technical standpoint. The benchmark December gold contract opened ₹388 lower at ₹1,48,928 per 10 grams, and further analysis indicates that the support level is currently at ₹1,48,385. A sustained fall below this level could see prices drop towards ₹1,47,445. Conversely, resistance is seen at ₹1,50,730, and a decisive move above this could allow gold to recover towards ₹1,52,135.
Silver, on the other hand, is witnessing some short covering, with open interest falling by 0.81% to 16,450. The December silver contract opened ₹960 lower at ₹2,25,127 per kg. Current support for silver is at ₹2,24,895, with a potential drop towards ₹2,23,700 if this level is breached. Resistance is noted at ₹2,27,990, and a breakout above this could lead to further gains towards ₹2,29,890.
Global Market Trends and Future Outlook
The global outlook for gold and silver remains uncertain as investors weigh the implications of US monetary policy and economic data. Gold prices had previously reached a high of ₹1,80,779 per 10 grams and $5,586.20 per ounce earlier this year, while silver peaked at ₹4,20,048 per kg and $121.79 per ounce. The current decline raises questions about whether these highs can be revisited in the near term.
As the dollar continues to strengthen and bond yields rise, the precious metals market may remain under pressure. Investors should closely monitor economic indicators and central bank signals that could influence future price movements.
