Devyani’s Profit Return Meets a More Cautious Market Test
A return to quarterly profit and stronger operating performance were offset by a sharp sequential earnings decline and a pullback in the shares.
Devyani International reported consolidated net profit of ₹3.46 crore for the September quarter, alongside EBITDA of ₹229 crore and 70 store additions. But profit fell from the preceding quarter, while the stock retreated nearly 8% from its intraday high even as the Nifty 50 advanced.
A turnaround, but a sharp sequential drop
The operator of KFC and Pizza Hut in India posted a consolidated net profit of ₹3.46 crore for the quarter ended September 2026, compared with a net loss of ₹23.95 crore in the comparison figure cited. That marks a return to profit, but the headline improvement sits alongside a weaker quarter-on-quarter trend: profit fell 79.8% from ₹17.10 crore in Q1FY27, the quarter ended June 2026.
Total income was ₹1,531.39 crore, up 10.8% year on year but down 4.2% from the previous quarter. The figures point to a business making progress against the year-earlier comparison while still facing pressure to sustain momentum from one quarter to the next. The comparison period attached to the ₹23.95 crore loss is not consistently identified in the figures, so investors should be cautious about drawing conclusions from that year-on-year comparison alone.
Store additions support operating growth
Devyani added 70 stores during the quarter, including 50 KFC outlets, taking its network to 2,325. It said positive same-store sales growth was recorded across most of its portfolio and that it remained on track to add 200–220 stores during the year. The combination of new outlets and healthier sales at existing stores can broaden revenue opportunities, although expansion also makes execution and cost control important to the operating outcome.
The company cited 34% growth in operating EBITDA, with EBITDA at ₹229 crore. Chairman Ravi Jaipuria separately described EBITDA as rising nearly 18% to the same amount, citing stronger same-store sales and cost control despite inflation in raw materials and wages. The disclosed figures do not clarify the basis for the difference between those growth rates. Jaipuria said same-store sales growth ranged from 4% to 9% across the brand portfolio in India, except Pizza Hut, which showed sequentially better numbers.
Why the market response was less upbeat
In Monday’s trading, the shares fell from a high of ₹129.39 to an intraday low of ₹117.51, a decline of nearly 8% from the peak. At 12:50 p.m., Devyani traded at ₹118.95, down 1.2%, on more than 46 lakh shares on the NSE. The Nifty 50 was up 1% at 23,281, making the stock’s relative weakness notable, though the figures do not establish a single reason for the move.
The sequential decline in profit and income may have tempered enthusiasm around the return to profitability. The share price had also fallen 20% so far in 2026, according to the reported figures, despite reaching a 52-week high of ₹169.26 on October 30, 2025, and a low of ₹91.55 on April 2, 2025. These levels provide context, not a forecast: the next assessment will depend on whether store growth and same-store sales can translate into steadier earnings.
Key Highlights
- Devyani reported September-quarter consolidated net profit of ₹3.46 crore.
- Profit declined 79.8% from ₹17.10 crore in the June quarter.
- Total income rose 10.8% year on year to ₹1,531.39 crore, but fell 4.2% sequentially.
- The company added 70 stores, taking its network to 2,325, and is targeting 200–220 additions during the year.
- Shares fell nearly 8% from the intraday high while the Nifty 50 gained 1% at the cited time.
Investor Note: The return to profit and store-led operating growth are constructive, but the steep sequential earnings decline and differing EBITDA growth figures call for closer scrutiny. Investors may want to track same-store sales, expansion execution and cost control over subsequent quarters rather than treating one quarter’s turnaround as a settled recovery.
