Adani Power Contracts Put BHEL’s Execution Capacity in Focus
The ₹28,000 crore award adds substantial work to BHEL’s pipeline, while the pace of delivery will determine how much reaches its bottom line.
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited has received orders from Adani Power for equipment and services for four 2×800 MW projects, with a combined stated value of ₹28,000 crore. The announcement sent BHEL shares higher in intraday trading, but the longer-term significance will depend on execution, profitability and cash conversion across its already substantial order book.
Four large projects expand BHEL’s power workload
The contracts cover the supply of boilers, turbines and generators, along with auxiliaries and agreed services. Each project is valued between ₹5,000 crore and ₹7,000 crore, excluding GST. Together, the four awards are described as worth ₹28,000 crore.
For BHEL, the award reinforces its role in supplying equipment for large thermal power projects. It also adds to the potential workload in its power business. However, an order win is not the same as revenue or profit already earned: the financial benefit will be recognised as work progresses, and the terms and timing of execution will matter.
A sizeable backlog offers visibility, but raises delivery demands
BHEL’s outstanding order book stood at ₹2.58 trillion as of September 30, 2026. The company also has orders across areas beyond thermal power, including transportation, transmission, nuclear, coal gasification and defence. The Adani Power contracts therefore add to an existing pipeline rather than forming a standalone growth story.
A large backlog can support revenue visibility, but it also increases the importance of project scheduling, billing and collections. Investors will want to see whether BHEL can convert orders into completed work without weakening margins or tying up more working capital. The company’s ability to execute across multiple business areas will be as important as the headline value of new wins.
Broker forecasts hinge on earnings conversion
Brokerages cited in the source see the order book, improving execution and better fixed-cost absorption as potential drivers of growth and profitability. Geojit Investments projected revenue and earnings per share compound annual growth rates of 27% and 79%, respectively, over FY26-28, and assigned a ₹453 target price with a Buy rating.
ICICI Securities highlighted execution of the backlog and a rising contribution from areas such as services, transmission, nuclear and defence. It cited 2,260 MW of capacity addition in H1FY27 against a full-year target of 4,790 MW, and receivable days of 94 compared with 120 a year earlier. Its Buy rating carried a fair value of ₹605. These are brokerage estimates, not assured outcomes, and rely on sustained delivery and improved returns.
The share rally does not remove execution risk
BHEL rose as much as 6% to ₹423.10 in Wednesday’s intraday trade, with 1.1 million shares changing hands across the NSE and BSE in the first 40 minutes. The gain outpaced the BSE Sensex’s 0.56% rise at the reported time. The stock had previously reached a record high of ₹463.60 on October 14, 2026.
The market response reflects the scale of the award, but investors should distinguish order-book growth from sustainable earnings growth. Margin performance, working-capital efficiency, timely billing and cash collection remain important tests as BHEL executes the contracts and its wider backlog.
