Bandhan Bank Shares Rally 8% Today: What’s Driving the Surge?

Bandhan Bank Shares Surge 8% Amid Potential Investment from Global Investor

The recent rally in Bandhan Bank shares highlights growing investor interest, driven by potential backing from a prominent global investor.

Bandhan Bank shares surged by 8% today, reaching an intraday high of ₹171.68, following reports of interest from Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a notable global investor. This development has sparked optimism about the bank’s future, especially given its current valuation and improving financial metrics.

Investor Interest Sparks Rally

Bandhan Bank’s shares opened 3% higher at ₹162 on the NSE and continued to climb throughout the day, reflecting a strong market response to the news of Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s potential investment in Bandhan Financial Services Limited (BFSL), the bank’s promoter. As of 11 AM, shares were trading at ₹169.40, outperforming the benchmark Nifty 50 index, which was up by 0.53%.

The stock was among the most actively traded on the NSE, with over 29 million shares exchanged, valued at approximately ₹490 crore. This heightened trading volume indicates a robust interest from both retail and institutional investors, suggesting that the market is keenly watching developments surrounding the bank.

Valuation and Growth Potential

Kranthi Bathini, director of equity strategy at WealthMills Securities, noted that the prospect of marquee investors entering Bandhan Bank could significantly enhance its appeal, especially given its current valuation of around one-time book value. This valuation makes it an attractive option for medium to long-term investors, particularly in a market where institutional participation is seen as a catalyst for growth.

Bathini drew parallels with RBL Bank, which experienced a turnaround after institutional investors began to take interest. This comparison suggests that investors are hopeful for a similar trajectory for Bandhan Bank, especially if the investment discussions with Sheikh Tahnoon progress positively.

Financial Performance and Market Position

Bandhan Bank, a member of the Nifty Smallcap 100 index, has shown resilience, with a 17% increase in its stock price year-to-date. However, the bank’s shares have faced challenges, correcting 30% over the past three years and 49% over five years. Despite these fluctuations, the bank reported a 35% year-on-year increase in net profit for Q1FY27, amounting to ₹502 crore. Additionally, net interest income grew by 5.9% to ₹2,921 crore, and total income rose to ₹3,524 crore.

The improvement in asset quality is also noteworthy, with gross non-performing assets (NPA) at 3.1% and net NPA at 0.9%. These metrics indicate a strengthening financial position, which could further attract investor interest as discussions with potential investors unfold.
