Balrampur Chini Mills Secures Rs 75 Crore BioE3 Grant for PLA R&D

Balrampur Chini Mills Secures Significant Grant to Advance PLA Research and Development

The Rs 75 crore grant from the BioE3 initiative marks a pivotal investment in India’s biomanufacturing capabilities.

Balrampur Chini Mills has received a Rs 75 crore grant from the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) under the Department of Biotechnology’s BioE3 initiative. This funding will support the establishment of a pilot-scale R&D facility for Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) co-polymers at its Kumbhi complex in Uttar Pradesh.

Investment in Sustainable Materials

The grant under the BioE3 initiative aims to bolster the development of advanced bio-based materials and enhance indigenous biomanufacturing capabilities in India. The establishment of the 100 TPA pilot-scale R&D facility is a strategic move for Balrampur Chini Mills, allowing the company to focus on creating specialized PLA grades and advanced co-polymers for high-value applications.

This initiative aligns with global trends toward sustainability and the increasing demand for biodegradable materials, particularly in packaging and consumer goods. By investing in PLA technology, Balrampur Chini Mills is positioning itself as a key player in the bioplastics market, which is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.

Bridging Research and Commercialization

The R&D facility will not only focus on product development but also on generating techno-economic data and process know-how essential for scaling up to commercial production. This includes understanding customer requirements, developing PLA formulations, and validating product performance.

Moreover, the facility is designed to foster collaboration with industry, academia, and research institutions, which is crucial for bridging the gap between laboratory research and commercial manufacturing. This collaborative approach is expected to enhance innovation and accelerate the development of skilled talent in India’s emerging biomanufacturing sector.

Balrampur Chini Mills: A Diversified Player

Balrampur Chini Mills is not just a sugar manufacturer; it operates 10 sugar factories in Uttar Pradesh with a combined sugarcane crushing capacity of 80,000 TCD. The company also has significant operations in distillery and power cogeneration, with a distillery capacity of 1,050 KLPD and a saleable cogeneration capacity of 175.7 MW.

The company is concurrently setting up an 80,000 TPA integrated commercial PLA manufacturing facility at the same site, indicating a robust strategy to capitalize on the growing demand for sustainable materials.

Market Response and Financial Performance

Following the announcement of the grant, shares of Balrampur Chini Mills saw a notable increase of 4.03%, closing at Rs 686. This positive market response reflects investor confidence in the company’s strategic direction and its potential to leverage the grant for future growth.

However, it is important to note that the company reported a 14.39% decline in net profit to Rs 44.15 crore for the first quarter of June 2026, despite a 6.13% increase in net sales to Rs 1,636.79 crore compared to the same period last year. This mixed financial performance highlights the challenges the company faces in a competitive market.
