Market Divergence: CDSL Soars While NSDL Hits Record Low
The contrasting performance of CDSL and NSDL stocks highlights significant shifts in investor sentiment and market dynamics.
Understanding the Divergence
The contrasting trajectories of CDSL (Central Depository Services Limited) and NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited) can be attributed to several factors, primarily the changing landscape of the Indian capital markets. While CDSL has managed to maintain a positive growth trajectory, NSDL has struggled, recently hitting a lifetime low of ₹734.50 on the BSE, which is 8% below its IPO price of ₹800.
In contrast, CDSL, which has been listed on the NSE for over nine years, has seen its stock price soar by 748% from its IPO price of ₹149, despite a recent decline from its peak of ₹1,973.88 in December 2025. This performance reflects a broader trend of investor confidence in CDSL, particularly in the context of its strong relationships with retail brokers and a significant market share of approximately 80% in new demat accounts.
Market Dynamics and Investor Sentiment
Analysts attribute the divergence largely to a moderation in the euphoria surrounding capital markets, which has led to a de-rating of valuations for both companies. The pace of new demat account openings has also slowed, dropping from a peak of 38.4 lakh in CY24 to 27.1 lakh in CY26, reflecting a cooling off in retail investor participation amid market volatility and flat returns.
Sunny Agrawal, Head of Fundamental Research at SBI Securities, emphasizes that CDSL’s robust connections with retail brokers have been instrumental in its growth, allowing it to capture a larger share of the market compared to NSDL. This relationship has proven advantageous, especially in a period where investor sentiment is cautious.
Technical Analysis: CDSL and NSDL
From a technical perspective, both stocks exhibit contrasting trends. CDSL is currently in a downtrend, having recently breached its key support levels around ₹1,300-1,290. Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical & Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, notes that the stock is likely to remain bearish unless it can reclaim these levels. The Directional Index indicates strong bearish control, suggesting that further declines may be on the horizon.
Conversely, NSDL’s persistent downtrend is characterized by trading below all key Exponential Moving Averages, indicating a lack of institutional interest. Hitesh Tailor, Technical Research Analyst at Choice Broking, points out that NSDL is currently in oversold territory, with immediate resistance seen at the ₹790-820 range. The stock’s performance will be closely monitored as it approaches the psychological support level of ₹700.
