Analyst Flags Weak Trend in Hindalco, ATGL Amid Daily Death Cross

Technical Signals Put Hindalco and ATGL at a Crossroads

The bearish crossover adds to signs of weakness, but the key support and resistance zones will determine whether pressure persists.

Hindalco Industries and Adani Total Gas have formed a daily-chart “death cross”, with their 50-day moving averages falling below their 200-day averages. Both shares are also trading below key moving averages, while technical analyst Sudeep Shah has identified specific levels that could shape the next move. The signals point to caution, but do not determine how either stock will perform.

A bearish crossover follows steep pullbacks

Hindalco confirmed the death cross on October 22, while Adani Total Gas, or ATGL, recorded the crossover on October 21. The signal occurs when the shorter-term 50-day moving average slips below the 200-day average. It is commonly read as a bearish chart development because it reflects weaker recent price action relative to the longer-term trend.

The crossover comes after sizable declines from recent peaks. Hindalco has fallen more than 25% from its May 29 high of ₹1,176, while ATGL is down nearly 38% from its May 2026 peak of ₹860. In early trade on Tuesday, the shares were broadly flat at ₹883 and ₹533, respectively.

A moving-average crossover is a signal derived from past prices, not a forecast or a measure of a company’s operating performance. Its significance for investors is stronger when considered alongside the direction of the shares, momentum indicators and the price levels traders are watching.

ATGL’s momentum indicators reinforce the weak bias

Sudeep Shah, head of technical and derivatives research at SBI Securities, says ATGL is in a downtrend and is trading below key short- and long-term moving averages. He also points to a rising Average Directional Index, which indicates strengthening trend intensity in the bearish direction, and a falling Relative Strength Index, suggesting that downward momentum remains in focus.

Shah identifies ₹560-565 as immediate resistance. In his assessment, the bearish bias is likely to persist while the share remains below that zone. For investors, this is a level to monitor rather than a guaranteed ceiling: a sustained move above it would change the immediate chart picture, while continued trading below it would leave the analyst’s downside concern in place.

Hindalco’s ₹840-835 band is the key support to watch

Hindalco, too, is described as being in a downtrend and below key moving averages. The stock is roughly 7% below its 200-day exponential moving average, while its Moving Average Convergence-Divergence line is well below zero, reflecting a bearish technical bias.

The analyst sees ₹840-835, which coincides with a previous swing low, as a strong support zone. A decisive break below it could invite further weakness, he cautions. That makes the band a reference point for assessing whether selling pressure is extending, though support levels can fail and should not be treated as assured floors.

Hindalco’s earlier chart history also illustrates how quickly technical conditions can change: after a golden cross, when the 50-day average moved above the 200-day average, the stock rallied 73.5% from ₹678 in July 2025 to its May 2026 peak. The subsequent decline and new crossover underline why such signals are best read as evolving indicators, not stand-alone investment conclusions.
