Absence of AI in Equities to Strengthen India in a Year: CEA

India’s Economic Resilience: CEA Predicts Strength Amid AI Absence

Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran asserts that India’s lack of focus on artificial intelligence in equities could become a strategic advantage within a year.

The Chief Economic Advisor highlights that the current absence of AI in Indian equities, which has contributed to foreign investor sell-offs, may soon turn into a strength, positioning India favorably in global markets.

A Shift in Investor Sentiment

At the SBI-Amundi India Investor Seminar, Nageswaran expressed optimism that the current sell-off by foreign investors, attributed in part to the absence of AI opportunities in Indian equities, could reverse within a year. He emphasized that as the AI boom potentially stumbles, investors may seek growth opportunities beyond AI, leading them back to India’s robust economic fundamentals.

Nageswaran referred to India’s situation as a “second mover advantage,” suggesting that while the country may not currently be at the forefront of AI investments, it could benefit from a future shift in investor focus. He described the AI trend as a “borrowing story,” indicating that a decline in AI-driven investments might prompt capital to flow towards markets with strong growth potential, such as India.

Factors Influencing Capital Flows

Nageswaran identified four external factors contributing to capital flow challenges and currency depreciation in India: strained relations with the US, the absence of an AI trade, geopolitical tensions in West Asia affecting oil prices, and tightening monetary policies by global central banks. Despite these challenges, he highlighted India’s strong economic growth, manageable current account deficit, and a well-capitalized banking system as key strengths that differentiate it from other markets.

He noted that India has consistently achieved over 7% growth, even amidst various economic shocks, which reflects a resilient economic structure. The movement of domestic savings into capital markets further supports this positive outlook, suggesting a robust foundation for future growth.

The Road Ahead for Investors

Nageswaran’s insights suggest that while the current landscape may appear challenging, the fundamentals of the Indian economy are healthier than what exchange rates might indicate. Investors should consider the long-term potential of the Indian market, particularly as global dynamics evolve and opportunities outside of AI emerge.
