Crude’s Retreat Lifts Indian Equities as Cyclical Shares Lead
A sharp fall in oil prices and hopes of easing geopolitical tensions fuelled a broad advance, with autos, financials and other rate- and input-sensitive shares in focus.
Indian equities rallied sharply on Thursday as Brent crude fell below $95 a barrel and investors responded to hopes of a faster resolution to the US-Iran conflict. At noon, the Sensex was up 1.99% at 78,836.54 and the Nifty 50 had gained 1.87% to 24,407.90, with financial, auto and realty shares outperforming. The advance extended beyond large-caps, although pharma and healthcare stocks lagged.
Oil prices set the tone for the rally
The immediate catalyst was a steep decline in crude. Brent traded well below $95 a barrel, supporting shares of oil marketing companies, airlines, paint makers and tyre companies, which rose by as much as 7% during intraday trade. InterGlobe Aviation was among the Nifty 50’s leading gainers.
Lower oil prices can ease fuel or raw-material cost pressure for businesses that rely on energy and petroleum-linked inputs. They can also improve investor confidence when geopolitical uncertainty has been weighing on sentiment. But the session’s move reflects expectations, not proof that costs have permanently fallen: crude remains sensitive to developments around the conflict, and prices could reverse if those expectations change.
Financials and broader markets join in
Financial shares added weight to the benchmark advance. HDFC Bank rose 3.3% and was the second-largest contributor to the Nifty 50’s gains at the time of the update. Shriram Finance, Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company, and SBI Cards were among the stronger financial-services stocks.
The participation was not limited to the biggest companies. At noon, the Nifty MidCap and SmallCap indices were up 1.19% and 1.14%, respectively; later updates showed the MidCap 100 rising 1.67% and the SmallCap 100 gaining 0.89%. Capital-market-related companies also rallied, with the Nifty Capital Markets index up 4% on expectations of a better business outlook. These moves suggest buying spread across several market segments, though a single strong session cannot establish a sustained trend.
A strong index day still had clear exceptions
The rally was not uniform. Pharma and healthcare were the weakest sectors, while Dabur India fell 2.7% despite reporting healthy second-quarter earnings, and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories traded lower after receiving approval to sell generic Ozempic in Brazil. Those contrasting moves underline why investors should look beyond headline index gains: company-specific news and sector positioning can outweigh a supportive market backdrop.
The reported gains are intraday readings, not closing levels. Markets were also reacting to hopes that political developments in the US could help speed a resolution to the West Asia conflict. That remains a sentiment driver rather than a confirmed outcome, so investors will need to watch whether oil prices and market breadth hold up as fresh information emerges.
