BHEL Shares Surge to Record High Amid Strong Business Prospects
BHEL’s impressive rally reflects growing investor confidence in the company’s robust order book and favorable market conditions.
Strong Order Book Fuels Growth
BHEL’s recent performance can be attributed to a significant increase in its order book, which reached ₹2.6 trillion by the end of the June 2026 quarter. This represents a substantial rise from ₹2.39 trillion in FY26 and ₹1.96 trillion in FY25. The surge in order inflows, which hit ₹2.67 trillion in Q1FY27, has notably improved the company’s book-to-bill ratio to 7.1x, indicating strong revenue visibility for the medium term. The power sector dominates the order book, accounting for over 80% of total orders, while industrial segment orders make up the remaining 18.15%.
Revival in Thermal Power Demand
The revival in the thermal power sector is a key driver of BHEL’s growth. With India facing a projected power demand-supply mismatch, the reliance on thermal power is expected to persist. According to India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra), thermal power, which constitutes 251GW of the total installed capacity of 549GW, will continue to play a crucial role in meeting the country’s increasing energy needs. The Ministry of Power estimates that India will require an annual addition of 8GW to 10GW of thermal capacity until FY32, positioning BHEL to capitalize on this demand through accelerated project execution.
Positive Financial Performance and Analyst Outlook
BHEL’s financial turnaround is gaining momentum, with Q1FY27 revenue climbing 40% year-on-year to ₹7,698 crore. The company reported a positive EBITDA of ₹735 crore and a profit after tax of ₹382 crore, reflecting improved project execution and profitability. Analysts at ICICI Securities anticipate that BHEL is at the beginning of a structural upcycle, driven by operating leverage and a richer mix of higher-margin businesses. They project order inflows to exceed ₹70,000 crore in FY27, with EBITDA margins expected to expand from 6.9% in FY26 to 11.5% by FY28.
Market Sentiment and Future Prospects
Despite the optimistic outlook, analysts at Kotak Institutional Equities caution that the current market capitalization of BHEL implies an overly optimistic view of future thermal capacity additions. They suggest that while the economics of solar and storage technologies are becoming increasingly competitive, the potential profit pool from thermal equipment manufacturing remains substantial, estimated between ₹50,000 crore and ₹1 trillion. This indicates that while BHEL is well-positioned for growth, investors should remain vigilant regarding market dynamics and government policies affecting the energy sector.
