India’s Vegetable Oil Imports Up 1.5% Month-on-Month in August 2026

India’s Vegetable Oil Imports Show Steady Growth Amid Rising Demand

The latest figures reveal a modest yet significant uptick in India’s vegetable oil imports, reflecting ongoing demand dynamics in the edible oils market.

According to the Solvent Oil Extractors Association of India (SEA), India’s vegetable oil imports for August 2026 reached 15.72 lakh tonnes of edible oils and 37,150 tonnes of non-edible oils. This marks a 1.5% increase from the previous month, driven primarily by heightened demand for crude soybean oil and refined soybean oil.

Monthly Import Trends

In August 2026, India imported 15.72 lakh tonnes of edible oils, up from 15.49 lakh tonnes in July 2026. This increase is largely attributed to a surge in crude soybean oil imports, which rose by 11% to 554,000 tonnes, compared to 367,000 tonnes the previous month. Additionally, refined soybean oil imports also saw a notable increase of 19%, reaching 74,000 tonnes from 62,000 tonnes.

Cumulative Import Performance

Cumulatively, during the first ten months of the 2025-26 oil year (November 2025 to August 2026), total vegetable oil imports (including both edible and non-edible) reached 138.84 lakh tonnes, up from 133.37 lakh tonnes during the same period in the previous year. This represents a 4% increase year-on-year, indicating a robust demand for vegetable oils in the Indian market.

Implications for the Market

The steady rise in vegetable oil imports suggests a continued reliance on foreign sources to meet domestic demand. With the increase in soybean oil imports, it appears that consumers are shifting preferences, possibly due to price fluctuations or supply chain dynamics. This trend could have implications for domestic producers and pricing strategies in the edible oils segment.
