Biocon Share Price Rises Nearly 6% Despite 52% Q2 Profit Drop

Biocon’s Rebound Puts H2 Growth Plans in Focus

Investors looked beyond a sharp quarterly profit decline as Biocon pointed to contract wins, product approvals and a stronger second half.

Biocon shares climbed nearly 6% after the company reported a 52% year-on-year fall in second-quarter net profit, while revenue edged higher and EBITDA declined. The results also included new commercial contracts, regulatory approvals and management’s expectation of stronger growth in the second half of FY27.

A sharp share-price response despite weaker earnings

Biocon rose 5.7% to an intraday high of ₹364 on Thursday, the day after it announced its Q2FY27 results. At 1:15 PM, the stock was up 5.2% at ₹362, with nearly 55 lakh shares traded on the NSE. The move came even as consolidated net profit fell to ₹41 crore from ₹85 crore a year earlier, and from ₹141 crore in Q1FY27.

The rally followed a period of relative weakness. Biocon had touched a 52-week low of ₹318.40 on October 23 and had since gained more than 14%. However, the recovery has not erased its underperformance: the stock was down nearly 7% year to date, against a 21.3% gain in the Nifty Pharma index. Over one month, it had fallen 2% while the benchmark rose 5%.

That contrast matters when reading the day’s move. A single session’s advance does not, by itself, reverse the broader relative performance. The price action suggests investors may be weighing the weaker reported quarter alongside the company’s operating milestones and outlook, though the available information does not establish one reason for the rally.

Revenue growth could not prevent margin pressure

Revenue from operations grew 2% year on year to ₹4,389 crore from ₹4,296 crore. But EBITDA declined 7% to ₹865 crore, while the EBITDA margin contracted by 200 percentage points to 20%, as stated in the company’s results. The divergence between modest revenue growth and lower EBITDA highlights the pressure on earnings during the quarter.

The business mix offered some support: Axis Securities said Biosimilars and Generics recorded revenue growth of 3% and 10%, respectively, while the Services segment weighed on performance. The brokerage also noted a marginal increase in working capital because of higher inventory intended to support an expected scale-up in Biosimilars and Generics in H2FY27. That inventory build is linked to the growth plan, but investors will want to see it translate into sales and cash generation.

Contracts and approvals underpin the second-half outlook

Biocon said it secured more than $100 million in new contracts and major payor wins for commercialized products in the US, alongside strong demand for Insulin Glargine. It also received US and Canadian regulatory approvals for the Yesintek autoinjector. The company said its second Insulin Glargine fill-finish line in Malaysia had become operational, with commercial supplies already underway.

Management expects stronger revenue growth, improved cash flows and better return ratios in the second half of FY27. Axis Securities pointed to anticipated Biosimilars growth from the US launch of bAflibercept (Yesafili) and bDenosumab (Bosaya/Okelso). In Generics, it cited the expected scale-up of generic Liraglutide in the US and other markets. These are forward-looking drivers, not outcomes already reflected in the reported quarter.

What investors should track next

Axis Securities retained its Buy rating and ₹485 target price after the results. That view rests partly on the expected acceleration in the second half, while the quarter itself showed lower profit and EBITDA and a drag from Services. Investors may therefore focus on whether launches and contract wins convert into sustained revenue growth, whether margins improve, and whether higher inventory supports sales and cash flows as planned.

Key Highlights

  • Biocon’s Q2FY27 net profit fell 52% year on year to ₹41 crore.
  • Revenue rose 2% to ₹4,389 crore, while EBITDA declined 7% to ₹865 crore.
  • The stock gained 5.7% intraday, but remained down nearly 7% year to date.
  • The company reported more than $100 million in new contracts and US payor wins.
  • Management expects stronger revenue growth and cash flows in H2FY27; Axis Securities retained a Buy rating with a ₹485 target.

Investor Note: The share-price rebound and brokerage target should be weighed against the earnings decline and the company’s reliance on an expected second-half improvement. Investors may want to assess actual progress in launches, margins, working capital and cash flows before drawing conclusions from a single session’s move.
