Samvat 2082: 16 Stocks Deliver Up to 570% Returns to Investors

A Select Group of Nifty 500 Stocks Outran a Weak Samvat

The sharp gains were concentrated in 16 stocks, even as benchmark indices fell—putting business performance and valuations in focus.

Sixteen Nifty 500 stocks delivered returns above 100% during Samvat 2082, led by Cupid and Sterlite Technologies, while the Sensex and Nifty 50 declined. Analysts linked several rallies to industry demand and earnings momentum, but cautioned investors against assuming that past gains will continue without evidence from upcoming results.

The outperformance came against a falling market

Samvat 2082 was a difficult period for Indian equities. The Sensex fell 7.9% and the Nifty 50 declined 6.8%, with pressure attributed to sustained foreign institutional selling, higher crude oil prices amid the West Asia conflict, and capital outflows linked to rising US bond yields. The index weakness makes the breadth of individual stock gains striking, but it also highlights how selective the rally was.

ACE Equity data showed that 16 companies in the Nifty 500 became multibaggers during the Samvat. Cupid led with a 570% return, followed by Sterlite Technologies at 556%. Sansera Engineering gained 193% and HFCL rose 187%. These returns stand apart from the benchmark declines, but they describe a past period and do not, by themselves, establish what a stock may deliver next.

Analysts point to demand, capacity and order execution

Analysts cited a combination of industry tailwinds and earnings growth over the previous four to six quarters among the drivers of the leaders’ performance. Cupid’s gains were attributed to capacity expansion, entry into higher-margin in-vitro diagnostics medical kits, and growth in domestic and export markets. Sterlite Technologies and HFCL were linked to a recovery in global optical-fibre demand, 5G enterprise network rollouts, and export orders for defence communications and data-centre connectivity.

Sansera Engineering and MTAR Technologies were associated with defence order books, clean-energy component sourcing and aerospace export diversification. The cited analysis also pointed to margin expansion in Sansera’s non-automotive and aerospace business and improved revenue execution in MTAR’s precision instrumentation operations. These are potential explanations for past performance, not guarantees that order conversion or earnings momentum will persist.

The gains spanned sectors, but were not uniform

The rest of the list included Welspun Corp, up 179%; Aditya Infotech and Rubicon Research, each up 177%; and MTAR Technologies and Ather Energy, which rose 175% and 158%, respectively. Laurus Labs also gained 158%, while Acutaas Chemicals advanced 137%. Thangamayil Jewellery rose 130%, TD Power Systems 116%, Chennai Petroleum Corporation 112%, Welspun Living 108% and Aether Industries 101%.

For Laurus Labs, analysts cited a recovery in active pharmaceutical ingredient pricing, a growing contract development and manufacturing pipeline, and generic formulation launches. The varied drivers across the list—from healthcare and chemicals to communications, engineering and jewellery—show why the group should not be treated as a single investment theme. Each company’s performance depends on its own business execution and the durability of the factors that supported its rally.

A strong past return raises the bar for proof

The caution from analysts is central to the outlook for Samvat 2083. SBI Securities’ Sunny Agrawal called for selectivity rather than indiscriminate optimism and suggested that investors consider partial profit-taking after sharp advances. Equity99’s Rahul Sharma said some multibagger stocks looked expensive and advised investors to assess results over one or two quarters before deciding whether the business thesis behind the rally is holding up.

Kotak Neo’s outlook, as cited in the article, was more constructive on long-term opportunities, pointing to supportive corporate earnings and potentially more attractive entry points after the correction. It also flagged geopolitical and global uncertainty as possible sources of short-term volatility. For investors, these views are not necessarily contradictory: market corrections can create opportunities, but a lower market or a strong past return does not remove the need to assess valuation and business delivery.

Key Highlights

  • Sixteen Nifty 500 stocks returned more than 100% in Samvat 2082, despite declines in the Sensex and Nifty 50.
  • Cupid and Sterlite Technologies led the list with gains of 570% and 556%, respectively.
  • Analysts cited earnings growth, sector demand, capacity expansion and order execution among the drivers of selected rallies.
  • Investors were advised to be selective, consider partial profit-taking and check whether results support the original investment thesis.
  • Geopolitical and global uncertainty could continue to contribute to market volatility, while the brokerage outlook cited opportunities in quality companies.

Investor Note: The returns are backward-looking and do not establish future performance. Investors should assess each company’s valuation, earnings and execution against the reasons for its rally, and make decisions in line with their own risk tolerance.
