NSEIX Extends Trading Hours to 23.5 Hours for Near-Round-the-Clock Access

GIFT City’s Derivatives Market Moves Closer to 24-Hour Trading

NSEIX’s longer trading window is designed to connect GIFT Nifty participants with market activity across major global time zones.

NSE International Exchange has extended its operating day to 23 hours and 30 minutes, with the new schedule taking effect on November 2. The change comes as notional turnover in GIFT Nifty index contracts rose to $120.45 billion in October from $110.93 billion in September.

A longer window links three major market sessions

NSEIX, the GIFT City exchange where GIFT Nifty contracts trade, will now open at 3.15 am IST and close at 2.45 am the following day. Its previous operating schedule covered about 22 hours. The additional time is intended to let market participants access Asian, European and US trading sessions through a single exchange venue.

That matters because international market developments can occur while Indian markets are closed. A longer trading window may give participants more opportunity to adjust positions or manage exposure as events unfold across time zones, rather than waiting for the next conventional session. It also makes the exchange’s operating hours more comparable with some global futures venues: the supplied comparison lists the Chicago Board of Trade at 23 hours a day.

Turnover growth provides the immediate backdrop

The schedule change arrives as activity in GIFT Nifty contracts expands. October turnover reached $120.45 billion in notional terms, up from $110.93 billion in September. The figures indicate rising transaction activity, though notional turnover represents the value of contracts traded and should not be read as cash invested or as a direct measure of exchange revenue.

The contracts moved to NSEIX from the Singapore Exchange on July 3, 2023. In that context, longer hours extend the time available to trade the product on its current venue. The turnover data and the operating-hours decision are relevant signs of activity around the exchange, but the figures alone do not establish how much of the increase is attributable to the new schedule or whether it will persist.

Access expands, but execution still matters

For traders, the practical benefit is a wider period in which they can respond to overseas developments and manage positions. For the exchange, the move supports its stated aim of building a globally accessible marketplace from GIFT City. NSEIX has described the extension as a milestone in that effort and positioned the schedule as nearly continuous trading for close to 24 hours on five days.

Longer availability, however, should not be confused with guaranteed liquidity or better execution at every hour. Market participants still need to assess trading conditions, pricing and the risks of holding positions through periods when activity may differ. NSEIX says maintenance will take no more than three minutes between sessions and under 15 minutes at the end of the day, limiting scheduled interruptions within the extended timetable.

What the change could mean for GIFT City

The move strengthens GIFT City’s proposition for participants seeking access to GIFT Nifty across international market hours. Its significance will depend not only on the length of the session but also on whether participants use the additional window and whether trading activity is sustained across it. The exchange’s next test is therefore operational as well as commercial: delivering a near-round-the-clock schedule while supporting effective participation throughout the day.

  • NSEIX’s 23-hour-30-minute schedule took effect on November 2.
  • The exchange now operates from 3.15 am IST to 2.45 am the next day.
  • The expanded window is intended to cover Asian, European and US market sessions.
  • GIFT Nifty notional turnover rose to $120.45 billion in October from $110.93 billion in September.
  • Longer hours create more scope to respond to global developments, but do not guarantee liquidity throughout the session.

Investor Note: The extended schedule is an important development for GIFT City’s market infrastructure, but investors should distinguish expanded access from assured trading depth. The durability of October’s turnover growth and activity across the new hours will be important indicators to watch.
