Reliance Rally Recasts the Market’s Monday Session
A record quarterly profit and renewed attention to Jio’s value helped lift Reliance shares—and gave the benchmark indices a powerful late-session push.
Reliance Industries rose 11.6% to ₹1,300, adding ₹1.83 trillion to its market capitalisation in its biggest single-day increase since April 2020. The move contributed nearly half of the increase in the combined market value of Nifty 50 constituents and helped the index close 1.68% higher.
A heavyweight rally changed the closing picture
Reliance’s surge was the defining force in Monday’s market session. The stock’s gain lifted the Nifty 50’s indicative price as much as 2.8% during the closing auction session, compared with a 1.2% rise beforehand. The index finished at 23,440.8, up 1.68%, while the Sensex advanced 1.66% to 75,692.78.
Reliance added ₹1.83 trillion in market value, accounting for nearly half the increase across Nifty 50 constituents. The broader advance was not limited to large caps: advancing shares outnumbered declining ones 1,955 to 738, and the combined market capitalisation of NSE-listed companies rose by about ₹7.7 trillion. All broad-market indices ended higher for a third consecutive session.
Jio’s value is sharpening the sum-of-the-parts case
Investors have long assessed Reliance through a sum-of-the-parts framework, valuing its different businesses separately. The source places the value of Reliance’s 64.5% stake in Jio Platforms at ₹8.37 trillion, giving investors a more visible reference point for one important part of the group’s valuation. That does not, by itself, establish the value of Reliance as a whole: the market’s assessment also depends on the other businesses and the discount investors apply to a holding company.
Jio Platforms fell 0.74% to ₹1,420 even as Reliance rallied, showing that the two securities did not move in tandem on the day. A market view cited in the source points to Jio’s average revenue per user, or ARPU, still lagging Bharti Airtel’s, with a possible future tariff revision seen as a potential catalyst. That remains a prospective driver, not a confirmed change.
Refining conditions add another layer to the story
The market commentary also linked Reliance’s refining position to disruption and uncertainty affecting Russian and Saudi refineries amid the West Asia crisis and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. It argued that limited ability among US and other refineries to process heavier crude grades, including Venezuelan crude, could favour Reliance as the world’s largest grassroots refinery. This is one explanation for the day’s strength, rather than a guarantee that refining conditions will remain supportive.
Metal and oil and gas shares led sector gains after Reliance’s results. The company’s record quarterly profit was an immediate catalyst, while the wider market response suggests investors also treated the result as relevant to sentiment beyond the stock itself.
Options activity points to a sharp reset in expectations
Reliance accounted for more than a fifth of stock options contracts traded. Its November ₹1,300 call was the market’s most actively traded stock option, with 176,350 contracts, while its premium rose more than fivefold to ₹19.4. Open interest in the ₹1,200 call fell 58% as the premium climbed from ₹20 to ₹87, indicating that traders who had positioned for the share price to stay below that strike were closing positions.
Put writing at strikes of ₹1,220–₹1,260, including a sixfold rise in open interest at the ₹1,250 put, points to traders taking positions around those levels ahead of the November 23 expiry. Options positioning can change quickly, however, and should not be read as a dependable forecast of where the stock will settle.
