Sensex Extends Rally, Jumps 1,030 Points Intraday: 6 Key Reasons

Oil, Earnings and Reliance Fuel a Broad Market Rebound

A third day of gains lifted benchmarks and drew mid- and small-cap shares into the advance, though the rally’s durability will depend on follow-through.

The Sensex rose as much as 1,030 points, while the Nifty 50 gained up to 278 points, as easing crude prices, a strong Reliance Industries move and improving earnings sentiment supported equities. Foreign portfolio investors also returned as net buyers last week, but that flow may not yet signal a lasting change in trend.

Reliance gave the benchmarks a significant lift

The Sensex climbed to an intraday high of 75,489.70, up 1.38%, while the Nifty 50 reached 23,330.70, a gain of 1.20%. Both indices were extending a rally that had already added more than 1,200 points to the Sensex over the previous two sessions. The latest advance was therefore part of a three-day run, rather than an isolated jump.

Reliance Industries was a major contributor. Its shares rose nearly 7% after better-than-expected second-quarter results, adding about 400 points to the Sensex—roughly a quarter of the benchmark’s 1,000-point rise. Analysts cited in the source maintained buy ratings, pointing to the company’s strong oil-to-chemicals performance and its implications for the earnings outlook. The stock’s outsized contribution also means investors should distinguish index strength from gains shared across the market.

Cheaper oil and a shift away from AI shares helped sentiment

Brent crude retreated from the previous week’s high of $118 to around $110, with futures falling a further 3% to below $110 in the session. For India, a major crude importer, lower oil prices can ease pressure on the broader market’s cost and inflation outlook. The source also pointed to reports of truce talks in the US-Iran conflict as a factor weighing on oil. That relief remains conditional: a reversal in crude could quickly change the mood.

Another cross-current was weakening enthusiasm for AI-linked technology stocks. The source described India as a potential “counter AI” trade, with traditional IT services shares attracting attention as the AI trade unwound. IT stocks rose by as much as 2%, while the sector index was up 0.8%. The move may reflect changing investor preferences, but one session does not establish a sustained rotation.

Buying broadened, but flows and earnings need confirmation

The rally extended beyond large caps: the Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 advanced 0.85% to 0.95%. Most sectoral indices also traded higher, led by metals, while FMCG, PSU banks and realty each gained more than 1%. Pharma was the exception. This breadth suggests participation improved, although investors should not assume every segment has entered a durable uptrend.

Foreign portfolio investors bought ₹6,300 crore of equities in the cash market last week after weeks of selling. That is an encouraging change in the immediate flow picture, but the source cautions that it is too early to call a trend reversal. Earnings offered another support: Jefferies said more than half of the companies it tracked were beating expectations, and its FY27 MSCI India earnings estimate had been raised by one percentage point to 15%. Cost pressures remain part of the picture, and several large companies were yet to report.

Technical levels frame the near-term test

The cited technical view was positive, with a long bullish weekly candle and higher lows on daily charts. The analyst identified 22,800 and the 20-day simple moving average near 22,600 as Nifty support, and 74,000 and 73,400 as key Sensex levels. These are reference points, not guarantees: holding above them would support the near-term uptrend, while a breach could test confidence. The suggested approach was to consider buying on dips and booking profits on rallies.

Key Highlights

  • Sensex gained as much as 1,030 points; Nifty 50 advanced up to 278 points.
  • Reliance’s nearly 7% rise contributed about 400 Sensex points after its results.
  • Brent eased from its recent $118 high to around $110, supporting sentiment.
  • Mid- and small-cap indices joined the advance, while pharma lagged.
  • FPIs bought ₹6,300 crore last week, but a sustained reversal is not confirmed.
  • Analysts highlighted key support near 22,800 for Nifty and 74,000 for Sensex.

Investor Note: The rally has support from several sources, but Reliance’s large contribution and the tentative nature of foreign buying argue for caution. Investors may want to assess market breadth, upcoming earnings and whether crude prices and technical support levels remain favourable, rather than treating a sharp intraday rise as proof of a lasting trend.
