HUL’s Q2 Growth Comes With a Margin Question
Strong sales and higher profit were not enough to keep investors focused on growth alone as HUL shares reversed sharply.
Hindustan Unilever reported 15% sales growth in the September quarter, but EBITDA margin narrowed by 140 basis points. Its shares swung from an early gain to a steep intraday decline, leaving investors to weigh stronger revenue against slower profit growth and compressed margins.
Revenue growth outpaced profit growth
HUL reported consolidated net profit of ₹2,790 crore for the quarter ended September 2026, up 3.9% from ₹2,685 crore a year earlier. Revenue from operations rose 14.5% to ₹18,226 crore, while sales increased 15%—the company’s highest sales growth in 14 quarters.
The difference between revenue and profit growth is an important part of the quarter’s picture. The business delivered a stronger top line, but the increase in net profit was more modest. That makes the quality and conversion of sales into earnings relevant for investors assessing whether momentum can translate into sustained profit growth.
Segment growth was led by home care and beauty
HUL recorded double-digit revenue growth in home care and beauty and wellness. Personal care and foods each grew revenue by around 8%. The figures point to growth across the reported segments, although the available results do not provide enough detail to compare their contribution to total revenue or profit.
For investors, the segment split matters because overall growth can conceal differences in momentum across businesses. The double-digit performance in two segments is encouraging, while the lower growth rates in personal care and foods are worth monitoring in subsequent results. The quarter’s headline sales growth alone does not show whether these patterns will persist.
Margin pressure complicated the earnings read-through
EBITDA increased 8% to ₹4,089 crore from ₹3,785 crore, but EBITDA margin fell to 22.6% from 24%, a contraction of 140 basis points. EBITDA growth therefore lagged sales growth, showing that higher revenue did not translate into an equivalent increase in operating earnings during the quarter.
The results provided do not specify what drove the margin decline, so attributing it to a particular cost or product mix would be premature. Investors may look for further information on the factors behind the compression and whether margins stabilise. HUL also declared an interim dividend of ₹19 per share, providing a cash return to shareholders, but that does not resolve the question around operating profitability.
The share-price reversal reflects competing signals
HUL shares initially rose to ₹1,861 on the NSE after the results, up 2.3% at the intraday high, before reversing and falling to ₹1,765.50. At 12:10 p.m., the stock was down 0.8% at ₹1,803, with around 19 lakh shares traded. The Nifty 50 was down 0.4% at that time, indicating a weaker broader market, though it does not by itself explain HUL’s larger intraday swing.
The shares were near a six-year low; the stock had touched an over six-year low of ₹1,758 on Tuesday. That context can make a stock’s reaction more sensitive to how investors interpret results, but the price action alone does not establish a longer-term outlook. The reversal suggests the market was weighing sales growth against margin contraction and the more modest rise in profit.
