Sensex Sheds 353 Points, Nifty Ends Near 22,700; FMCG, IT, Energy Fall

Crude Fears Weigh on Benchmarks as Auto and Bank Shares Cushion Losses

A sharp intraday recovery softened the decline, but pressure across energy, IT and FMCG stocks kept the broader market cautious.

The Sensex fell 353 points to 73,246 and the Nifty 50 lost 51 points to close at 22,699, after both indices rebounded from their intraday lows. Weakness in oil and gas, IT and FMCG shares offset gains in autos and select banks, while mid- and small-cap indices finished higher. Rising crude, foreign investor flows and corporate earnings remain important signposts for market direction.

A late rebound trimmed, but did not erase, the losses

Indian benchmarks ended lower on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, but well above the session’s weakest levels. The Sensex recovered nearly 650 points from its low of 72,604 to close at 73,246, down 353 points, or 0.48%. The Nifty climbed from an intraday low of 22,498 to settle at 22,698.85, a decline of 51 points, or 0.22%.

That recovery suggests buyers emerged as prices fell, but the close below 22,700 and the majority of Sensex constituents ending in the red point to persistent caution. Only nine Sensex stocks advanced. Larsen & Toubro led the gainers, rising 3.6%, while Reliance Industries fell 3.46% and was the session’s biggest laggard.

Crude and sector weakness set the tone

Brent crude rose 1.4% to $115.47 a barrel amid renewed concerns about Middle East supply. Higher crude can increase inflation and operating-cost pressures, making the move relevant beyond energy shares. The oil and gas index fell 2.27%, while the IT index lost 1.98% and FMCG declined 0.6%.

The day’s sector split was pronounced: the Nifty Auto index gained 1.5% and Bank Nifty rose 0.5%, while pharma, healthcare and media also advanced by more than 1%. This divergence means the benchmark decline did not describe every investor’s experience; sector and stock selection mattered. For businesses exposed to fuel costs, a sustained rise in crude could be a concern, although the session alone does not establish how long prices will remain elevated.

Broader shares held up better than the benchmarks

Mid- and small-cap shares bucked the weakness in the large-cap indices. The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 0.43% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 0.90%. Their advance points to pockets of buying outside the largest companies, but one session of outperformance is not enough to establish a wider change in market direction.

Jio Platforms’ listing at ₹1,359, a 21.36% premium to its issue price of ₹1,119, offered a contrasting sign of demand for that company even as the broader market remained unsettled. A strong debut can reflect interest in an individual offering; it does not, by itself, resolve concerns weighing on the wider market.

The next test is whether support can withstand global pressure

A technical assessment in the source placed the Nifty in a broader 22,400–22,800 range, with 22,500 identified as support and 22,800 as resistance. The index’s low of 22,498 brought it close to that cited support before buyers helped it recover. A decisive move beyond either boundary could signal a stronger directional shift, but those levels are reference points rather than guarantees.

Elevated crude, US 10-year yields above 5% and India VIX above 15 were flagged as reasons for caution. The outlook also depends on foreign investor flows and earnings commentary. Together, those factors could influence whether the rebound broadens or selling pressure returns; investors will need to distinguish short-term index support from evidence of a durable improvement in sentiment.
