Ather Energy Stock Rallies 20% in Two Days: Why It’s Surging

Ather’s First Quarterly Profit Meets a Capacity Bottleneck

A sharp improvement in demand and margins has put the EV maker’s growth plans under the spotlight, though its return to profit remains tentative.

Ather Energy shares gained 20% over two trading sessions after the company reported its first quarterly profit and outlined plans to add production capacity. The results point to improving sales and unit economics, but the small profit and execution required to expand manufacturing remain important considerations for investors.

Sales growth and margin gains underpin the rally

Ather Energy shares rose as much as 6% to ₹1,660 in Tuesday’s intraday trade, extending a two-session advance of 20%. The move came after the electric two-wheeler maker posted a consolidated profit after tax of ₹1.26 crore for the second quarter of FY27, against a loss of ₹154 crore a year earlier. The stock was up 5% at ₹1,656.70 at 9:58 a.m., while the Sensex was down 0.20%. A combined 5.57 million shares had changed hands on the two exchanges in the first 43 minutes.

The operating figures help explain investor interest. Vehicle sales rose 42% year on year to 93,211 units, while operating income climbed 63% to ₹1,464 crore. EBITDA was ₹74.2 crore, marking a second consecutive positive quarter, and the EBITDA margin improved to 0.8% from negative 2.7% in the previous quarter. Gross margin also edged up to 21% from 20%, despite higher input costs.

Taken together, the figures suggest that higher volumes are coinciding with better cost economics. But a ₹1.26 crore net profit is slim relative to the quarter’s operating income. The result is an important milestone, not yet proof that profitability is firmly established.

Demand is testing existing production capacity

Ather said customer enquiries increased 109% year on year to about one million, while pre-orders more than doubled to 180,000. Demand outpaced available production capacity, with its Hosur facility operating at 98% utilisation during peak production in the quarter. That makes the planned expansion a response to a stated supply constraint, rather than simply a longer-term capacity ambition.

The company plans to raise Hosur’s annual capacity by 75,000 units, from 420,000 to 495,000, by December 2026. Its AURIC facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is scheduled to begin phased commercial production from December 2026, with an initial annual capacity of 500,000 units. A further 150,000 units of capacity is planned there, expected to come on stream by the second quarter of FY28. Together, the facilities are expected to reach annual installed capacity of about 1.14 million units.

Expansion brings investment and execution demands

Ather expects to invest about ₹122 crore across the two facilities to support the capacity additions. More production capability could help the company respond to demand, but installed capacity does not automatically translate into sales. The new facility will start in phases, and the additional capacity will need to be brought into production and matched with customer demand.

ICICI Securities described the quarter as encouraging, citing demand growth and improving unit economics. It also highlighted the mass-market Konarc as a potential way to broaden Ather’s reach beyond its traditionally premium positioning. The brokerage noted management’s indication that it does not intend to raise prices over the next few quarters, while suggesting the product could improve affordability without compromising margins. Those outcomes remain to be demonstrated through market acceptance and sustained profitability.

Profitability remains the key test after the surge

The brokerage also flagged commodity inflation and said part of the margin improvement reflected temporary SKU and incentive management. These are relevant qualifications to a quarter in which gross margin improved despite higher input costs: investors will want to see whether margins can hold as production and sales grow. The share rally reflects optimism around demand, capacity and the return to profit, but the next test is whether those gains endure as expansion proceeds.

Key Highlights

  • Ather shares advanced 20% over two sessions after its quarterly results.
  • Q2FY27 sales rose 42% year on year to 93,211 units; operating income increased 63% to ₹1,464 crore.
  • The company reported ₹1.26 crore in PAT and ₹74.2 crore in EBITDA.
  • Enquiries rose 109% to about one million, and pre-orders exceeded 180,000.
  • Planned annual installed capacity is about 1.14 million units by Q2FY28, supported by an investment of approximately ₹122 crore.

Investor Note: Ather’s results show meaningful operating improvement, but its profit remains thin and the capacity plans will take time to deliver. Investors may want to track sustained margins, demand for the Konarc and the pace at which the new capacity is commissioned before drawing conclusions from the recent share-price surge.
