Sensex Jumps 483 Points as Stock Markets Rebound After Four-Day Slump

Buying Near Support Offers Relief, but Global Risks Keep Indian Equities on Guard

A broad-based recovery ended a four-session slide, though the forces that unsettled markets remain in view.

The Sensex gained 482.92 points and the Nifty closed above 22,750 as investors bought shares after four consecutive sessions of losses. Metals, telecommunications and healthcare led the advance, while a pullback in crude offered some relief. Elevated oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty and upcoming central-bank decisions mean the rebound has yet to settle broader market concerns.

A sharp rebound follows a steep four-session decline

Indian equities recovered from early losses on Monday, with value buying helping both benchmark indexes snap their losing streak. The Sensex finished 482.92 points, or 0.66%, higher at 73,606.75, while the Nifty added 153.20 points, or 0.68%, to close at 22,753.20.

The scale of the prior decline provides important context. Through Friday, the Sensex had shed 1,605 points, or 2.16%, and the Nifty had fallen 546 points, or 2.38%, over four straight sessions. Monday’s advance therefore offered relief, but it did not erase the losses or, by itself, establish that market sentiment has durably turned.

The Sensex moved through a wide intraday range of 1,092.18 points, between 72,514.57 and 73,606.75, and ended at its session high. That finish indicates that buying persisted through the day, although the large range also reflects a market still responding to changing risk appetite.

Metals and telecom led, while gains broadened beyond large caps

The advance was not confined to the headline indexes. The BSE Midcap Select index rose 1.48% and the SmallCap Select index gained 1.45%, showing a recovery in these segments after the previous week’s sharp correction. Investors were still selective, however, with earnings visibility and valuation comfort cited as priorities.

Among sectoral indexes, metals climbed 2.55%, telecommunications rose 2.07% and healthcare advanced 1.85%. Services, energy, commodities and capital goods also finished higher. Adani Ports was the strongest Sensex stock, up 2.72%, followed by gains in Eternal and Kotak Mahindra Bank. Bajaj Finance, HDFC Bank, Maruti, HCLTech and Power Grid were among the laggards, underlining that the session was not a uniform rally.

For investors, the sector mix matters: strength in several cyclical and defensive groups suggests buying extended beyond one narrow pocket. But a single session cannot confirm whether that breadth will continue. The divergence between advancing sectors and lagging stocks also makes index-level gains an incomplete guide to individual portfolio performance.

Crude eased, but global uncertainty remains a constraint

Brent crude fell 1.60% to $114.8 a barrel, offering a reprieve after last week’s high. That decline may have helped sentiment, but crude remained elevated, leaving oil prices an important variable for investors assessing the wider market outlook. Geopolitical uncertainty continued to weigh on confidence as well.

Attention was also turning to policy decisions from the US Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of Japan. The source provides no outcomes, so their eventual effect on Indian equities remains uncertain. Global trading was mixed: South Korea’s Kospi and Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell, while Shanghai’s SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng ended higher. European markets were trading up, while US markets had closed lower on Friday.

Foreign portfolio investors bought equities worth ₹887.65 crore on Friday, according to exchange data. That is a useful data point, but it predates Monday’s rebound and should not be treated as proof of sustained foreign buying. The more durable signal will be whether market participation and investor flows hold up alongside easing pressure from crude and global uncertainty.

Key Highlights

  • Sensex gained 482.92 points to 73,606.75; Nifty rose 153.20 points to 22,753.20.
  • Both benchmarks ended four-session losing streaks after sizable cumulative declines.
  • Metals, telecom and healthcare were among the leading sectors; some heavyweight stocks still lagged.
  • Midcap and small-cap indexes advanced, though investor preference remained selective.
  • Brent fell 1.60% to $114.8 a barrel, but crude, geopolitics and global policy decisions remain risks to sentiment.

Investor Note: Monday’s rebound signals renewed buying after a sharp decline, not a confirmed change in trend. Investors may want to watch whether gains broaden and persist, while factoring in oil prices, global policy developments and company-specific valuations rather than treating one strong session as a standalone buy signal.
