Steel Strips Wheels’ Earnings Breakout Meets a Major Capacity Bet
A sharp profit jump and plans for a ₹1,400 crore manufacturing project have put the auto-components maker in focus.
Steel Strips Wheels shares rallied after the company reported strong Q2FY27 revenue, earnings and margin growth. Its proposed investment in alloy wheels, steel wheels and hot stamping adds a longer-term growth opportunity, but also brings execution and funding considerations.
Quarterly earnings provide the immediate catalyst
Steel Strips Wheels (SSWL) reported standalone revenue of ₹1,930 crore for the quarter ended September 2026, up 61% year on year. EBITDA more than doubled to ₹235 crore, while profit after tax rose 208% to ₹119 crore. The company’s EBITDA margin improved by 150 basis points quarter on quarter to 12.2%.
Those results help explain the speed of the market response: the shares gained 36% over two trading days and reached an intraday high of ₹533. Trading activity was unusually heavy, with 24.33 million shares—equivalent to 15.5% of SSWL’s total equity—changing hands across the NSE and BSE. At the cited intraday update, the stock was up about 13%, compared with a 0.27% rise in the benchmark.
The rally also sits within a much larger advance: SSWL had gained 175% in calendar 2026, while the BSE Sensex had declined 14%. That contrast makes the latest earnings reaction notable, but it also means investors are assessing the results against an already substantial rise in the share price.
Product mix and exports may be supporting profitability
ICICI Securities said growth in the quarter was above expectations and pointed to a positive gap between value growth and volume growth. Its interpretation was that SSWL is moving towards higher-realisation products. Export revenue grew 69%, while EBITDA per wheel reached about ₹400, according to the brokerage.
The brokerage also noted higher capacity utilisation in steel and alloy wheels. If a richer product mix and exports continue to contribute, they could support earnings quality as well as sales growth. However, a single quarter does not establish that these drivers will persist; export expansion and the ability to stabilise margins remain important questions for investors.
₹1,400 crore project raises the growth stakes
SSWL has announced a ₹1,400 crore investment at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, planned over a period of up to 60 months. The proposal allocates ₹815 crore to alloy wheels with capacity of 2.5 million units a year, ₹410 crore to steel wheels with capacity of 1.6 million units a year, and ₹175 crore to hot stamping with capacity of 1.3 million strokes a year.
The scale and timeline make this a material part of the company’s outlook, rather than an immediate earnings driver. Funding is expected to come from debt and internal accruals. That mix could enable the expansion, but investors will need to track the pace of spending, project execution and the contribution from new capacity over time. The announcement itself does not guarantee that planned capacity will translate into sales or returns on schedule.
A strong rally lifts the bar for future delivery
ICICI Securities highlighted SSWL’s powertrain-agnostic products, volume visibility and growing export and alloy-wheel mix as positives. These are the brokerage’s reasons for its constructive view, not assurances about future performance. It also said it was awaiting management commentary on export sales ramp-up and margin stabilisation.
For investors, the central question is whether earnings growth can sustain the expectations reflected in the sharp share-price advance. The next signals to watch are the durability of margins, export progress and how effectively the company deploys capital into the announced project.
