Heavyweights Drive a Sharp Weekly Reset in Indian Market Value
A steep retreat in major banking and financial stocks weighed on the market’s largest companies, even as two heavyweight firms ended the week with gains.
Eight of India’s 10 most valuable listed companies lost a combined ₹1.55 trillion in market capitalisation over a holiday-shortened week. HDFC Bank and Bajaj Finance recorded the biggest declines, while TCS and Larsen & Toubro bucked the trend.
Financial stocks account for the largest cuts
HDFC Bank’s market value fell ₹55,506.95 crore to ₹10,67,121.12 crore, after its shares dropped 5% during the week. Bajaj Finance lost ₹34,180.51 crore in valuation, bringing its market capitalisation to ₹5,77,146.21 crore. Together, the two firms accounted for the bulk of the losses among the eight decliners.
Other substantial declines came from Reliance Industries, whose valuation fell ₹27,065.08 crore to ₹16,10,372.11 crore, and Life Insurance Corporation of India, down ₹21,062.24 crore to ₹4,81,142.58 crore. Bharti Airtel’s market value decreased by ₹9,360.75 crore, while State Bank of India lost ₹4,338.46 crore.
Infosys and ICICI Bank also ended lower, with valuation declines of ₹2,881.38 crore and ₹1,276.53 crore, respectively. The distribution shows that losses extended across several large companies, but were particularly pronounced in HDFC Bank and Bajaj Finance.
Index declines reflected weakness beyond a few names
The broader market backdrop was weak: the Sensex fell 1,605.44 points, or 2.15%, and the Nifty declined 546.15 points, or 2.36%, over the four-session week. The combined market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies dropped ₹20,78,774.28 crore to ₹4,51,83,393.14 crore from ₹4,72,62,167.42 crore on October 16.
Those figures put the losses among the top 10 in context: the fall in the value of all BSE-listed firms was much larger. Market capitalisation is calculated using share prices and the number of shares, so a decline reflects a lower market valuation; it does not mean that the same amount of cash has left a company’s accounts.
TCS and L&T provide a limited counterpoint
Tata Consultancy Services added ₹23,517.56 crore in market value to reach ₹9,14,652.52 crore. Larsen & Toubro gained ₹1,788.66 crore, taking its valuation to ₹5,01,513.72 crore. Their gains were not enough to offset the declines among the other eight companies, but they show that the week’s retreat was not uniform across every large-cap stock.
The ranking of the 10 most valuable firms also remained led by Reliance Industries, followed by Bharti Airtel and HDFC Bank. The list’s movement in market value offers a snapshot of how price changes affected large listed companies over the week; by itself, it does not explain the reasons behind those moves or indicate a change in underlying business performance.

Investor Note: A one-week change in market capitalisation captures share-price performance, not a complete assessment of a company’s prospects. Investors may want to distinguish broad market weakness from company-specific developments and assess each holding against its own fundamentals and risk profile.
