Surging Oil Prices Trigger Market Decline as Nifty and Sensex Face Pressure
The surge in oil prices has cast a shadow over Indian equity markets, leading to significant declines in both the Nifty and Sensex indices.
Impact of Rising Oil Prices
On Thursday, the Nifty 50 index ended at 22,687.65, down 123.7 points, or 0.54%, while the BSE Sensex dropped 460.3 points to close at 73,249.39. The persistent rise in Brent crude oil prices, which reached approximately $112 per barrel, has been a significant factor in this downturn. Analysts suggest that the increase in oil prices is likely to lead to higher operational costs for various sectors, particularly those reliant on oil, such as food production and manufacturing.
The Nifty has now lost 2% over the past three trading sessions and is currently 14% below its 52-week high. Broader market indices also reflected this trend, with the Nifty Midcap 150 and Nifty Smallcap 250 indices falling by 0.8% and 1.1%, respectively.
Geopolitical Tensions and Inflation Concerns
Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, highlighted that inflation concerns have taken precedence as geopolitical tensions in West Asia have escalated, leading to a sharp increase in crude prices. The weakening of the Indian rupee during the trading session further dampened investor sentiment, compounding the market’s woes.
As investors brace for upcoming policy decisions from major central banks, including the US Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank, foreign investment flows may remain subdued. Nair noted that domestic market direction will largely depend on the Q2 earnings reports, particularly management commentary regarding demand outlook for the upcoming quarters.
Market Volatility and Future Outlook
The India Volatility Index (VIX), a measure of market fear, rose by 0.9% to close at 15.82, reflecting increased uncertainty among investors. The VIX has surged by 43.3% over the past month, indicating heightened market volatility.
Pabitro Mukherjee, deputy vice-president of research at Bajaj Broking, noted that the Nifty 50 index has maintained a pattern of lower highs and lower lows, suggesting a continuation of the current corrective trend. He indicated that the index is likely to consolidate within the range of 22,500 to 23,150, with a breach below 22,400 potentially opening the door to further declines towards recent lows of 22,180.
