NCDEX Expands Horizons with Launch of NDEX and FINNDEX Indices
NCDEX’s new indices mark a significant shift towards becoming a comprehensive multi-segment exchange.
Understanding NDEX and FINNDEX
NDEX serves as a benchmark index comprising 20 large and liquid Indian equities, selected from the top 60 companies listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). In contrast, FINNDEX focuses on the financial sector, featuring 15 stocks from the top 40 eligible companies, explicitly excluding insurance firms. This careful selection process is designed to ensure that the indices reflect a diverse and representative sample of the Indian equity landscape.
The indices utilize a composite scoring methodology that assigns a 30% weight to both free-float market capitalisation and average daily traded value, while beta and volatility each account for 20%. This approach aims to balance company size, trading activity, and market sensitivity, thereby enhancing the reliability of the indices as investment benchmarks.
Significance of the Launch
The introduction of NDEX and FINNDEX is a pivotal moment for NCDEX as it transitions into a multi-segment exchange. Vikas Goel, the managing director and CEO of NCDEX, emphasized that as Indian capital markets evolve, the need for transparent and well-structured benchmarks becomes increasingly critical. This move is expected to attract greater domestic and international participation, thereby enhancing market depth.
Moreover, the indices are designed to support informed investment decisions and expand the toolkit available to market participants. The exchange has also committed to a biannual review and rebalancing of the indices in March and September, with provisions for ad-hoc adjustments under specific conditions. This ensures that the indices remain relevant and reflective of market dynamics.
Future Prospects for NCDEX
In addition to the launch of these indices, NCDEX is also expanding its offerings by introducing a mutual fund transaction platform. The exchange is awaiting final approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to launch its equity segment, expected in January. Following this, there are plans to introduce derivatives based on NDEX and FINNDEX, potentially in the second half of the next financial year.
This diversification strategy not only positions NCDEX as a more comprehensive market infrastructure provider but also aligns with the growing trend of exchanges offering a wider array of financial products to meet evolving investor needs.
