SRF Shares Hit 52-Week Low Amid Margin Concerns Despite Profit Growth
SRF’s recent performance highlights the challenges facing the chemicals sector, as investors react to margin pressures despite a rise in net profits.
Stock Performance and Market Reaction
SRF Ltd’s stock has faced significant pressure, extending its decline for a fifth consecutive session, with shares dropping 5.5% to an intraday low of ₹2,178.30. This decline comes despite the company reporting a 31% year-on-year increase in net profit, which reached ₹509.12 crore for the quarter ended September. The stock has now corrected 27% in 2026 and 30% over the past year, reflecting broader market concerns.
As of mid-morning trading, SRF shares were down 3.3% at ₹2,228.40, while the benchmark Nifty 50 index saw a modest decline of 0.22%. The stark contrast between the company’s profit growth and the stock’s performance has raised eyebrows among investors.
Q2 Results: Profit Growth vs. Margin Compression
Despite the impressive profit growth, SRF’s Q2 results revealed concerning trends in its margins. The company’s consolidated revenue surged 35% to ₹4,904 crore, driven by higher income across its segments. However, the EBITDA margin contracted by 330 basis points to 20.6%, primarily due to rising raw material costs.
Aditya Arora, a research analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, noted that while the chemicals segment reported a 25% revenue growth, the EBITDA declined by 10% year-on-year, with margins under pressure from pricing issues in specialty chemicals and oversupply from China. The packaging films segment also faced challenges, with margins contracting significantly due to a reversal of inventory benefits from the previous quarter.
Strategic Investments and Future Outlook
In a bid to bolster its growth prospects, SRF announced a ₹600 crore investment to establish a battery-grade aluminium foil manufacturing plant in Madhya Pradesh. This strategic move is expected to enhance its production capabilities, with Phase I slated for completion by September 2028 and Phase II by September 2030. Such investments may help the company mitigate some of the margin pressures it currently faces.
However, the immediate outlook remains challenging as the company grapples with fluctuating raw material costs and competitive pressures. Investors will be keenly watching how SRF navigates these headwinds in the coming quarters.
