IT Stocks Fuel Markets’ Biggest Four-Month Rally on HCLTech Boost

IT Sector Surge Drives Market Rally Amid Positive Sentiment

The Indian equity markets experienced a significant boost, driven by a rally in IT stocks following strong quarterly results from HCLTech.

Domestic equities saw their largest single-day gains in four months, largely propelled by HCLTech’s impressive performance and supportive government commentary.

HCLTech’s Strong Performance Fuels IT Rally

On Tuesday, the Nifty 50 index surged by 1.6% to close at 22,721.95, while the BSE Sensex rose by 1.54% to 73,033.81, marking the largest single-day advances since June. The rally was spearheaded by the Nifty IT index, which soared 5.22% to 29,830.10, its most significant one-day gain since May 2025. HCLTech’s shares jumped 8.42% after the company reported a net profit increase of 21.2% year-on-year, reaching Rs 5,132 crore, alongside an 11.5% rise in revenue to Rs 35,620 crore.

The results were buoyed by a notable 78% increase in revenue from advanced artificial intelligence services, which reached $219 million. Analysts suggest that the IT sector, previously beleaguered by pessimism regarding its growth prospects, is now poised for a rebound, particularly as businesses invest in AI infrastructure rather than semiconductor hardware. Somil Mehta, head of retail research at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, noted that the IT sector had been oversold and is now showing signs of recovery.

Broader Market Gains and Sector Performance

The rally was not limited to IT stocks; gains were broad-based across various sectors. The Nifty MidSmall IT & Telecom index rose by 2.77%, while realty stocks gained 2.46%. Other sectors, including consumer durables and FMCG, also saw positive movements, with respective increases of 1.56% and 1.40%. The Nifty Bank index rose by 1.03%, led by IndusInd Bank and Yes Bank, which saw gains of 2.85% and 2.01%, respectively.

The positive sentiment was further supported by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s remarks regarding the long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax. Her willingness to engage with stakeholders on this issue has sparked optimism among investors, suggesting potential changes to the tax regime that could benefit the market.

Currency Strength and Market Sentiment

Additionally, the Indian rupee strengthened against the dollar, closing at 95.28, up from 95.78, contributing to the overall positive market sentiment. The currency has appreciated by 1.6% over the past three trading sessions, providing further support to investors.

Despite the significant rally, the Nifty 50 remains down 0.24% for the week and 2.89% for the month, indicating that while the recent gains are encouraging, the market still faces challenges in the broader context.
