Equity mutual fund inflows surge 31% to ₹38,306 crore in September

Investor Enthusiasm Drives Surge in Equity Mutual Fund Inflows

Despite market pressures, equity mutual funds have seen a remarkable resurgence in investor interest, highlighting a robust belief in long-term wealth creation through equities.

Equity mutual fund schemes attracted a net inflow of ₹38,306 crore in September, rising 31% from the preceding month, driven by strong investor interest in mid-cap and small-cap funds despite underperformance in the equity market. The inflow was higher than ₹29,329 crore recorded in August, according to data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) on Monday.

Strong Performance in Small-Cap and Mid-Cap Funds

Among the various categories of equity mutual funds, small-cap funds led the charge with a net inflow of ₹9,039 crore, followed closely by mid-cap funds, which attracted ₹7,835 crore. Large-cap funds, however, lagged behind, recording a modest net inflow of ₹860 crore during the same period. This trend indicates a growing preference among investors for mid and small-cap stocks, which are often seen as having higher growth potential compared to their large-cap counterparts.

Investor Sentiment Amid Market Volatility

The significant inflow into equity mutual funds comes at a time when the broader equity market has been under pressure. Nirav Karkera, Head of Research and Fund Manager at W by Groww, noted that this surge reflects the enduring confidence Indian investors have in equities as a viable long-term investment strategy. He also suggested that some of this capital may have been redirected from debt and hybrid funds, indicating a strategic shift in investor preferences.

Contrasting Trends in Debt Funds

In stark contrast to the equity segment, debt mutual fund schemes experienced a staggering net outflow of ₹1.83 trillion in September, a significant increase from the ₹8,127 crore outflow recorded in August. This shift suggests that investors are increasingly wary of the fixed income market, possibly due to rising interest rates or a search for better returns in equities.

Overall Mutual Fund Industry Dynamics

The overall mutual fund industry reported a net outflow of ₹1.33 trillion during September, a stark contrast to the net inflow of ₹41,353 crore in August. This downturn in net inflows has led to a decline in the industry’s total assets under management (AUM), which fell to ₹82.64 trillion at the end of September from ₹87.07 trillion at the end of August. This decline underscores the volatility and shifting dynamics within the mutual fund landscape.
