TCS Earnings Spark IT Sector Rally Amid Recovery Hopes
The strong quarterly performance of TCS has revitalized investor interest in the IT sector, signaling potential recovery in demand.
TCS Results Boost Market Sentiment
On Friday, the Nifty IT index rose by 3.02%, while the Nifty 50 climbed 1.3%. TCS shares surged 3.85% to close at ₹2,156 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), having reached an intraday high of 6%. Despite this positive movement, TCS shares remain down 30% over the past year, reflecting broader market concerns, particularly related to an internal ownership dispute within the Tata Group.
The company reported a robust 14.9% year-on-year growth in consolidated net profit and an 11.2% increase in revenue for the July-September quarter of FY27. Analysts view these results as a potential turning point for the IT sector, indicating that the worst may be over and that demand could be on the rise.
Analyst Perspectives on TCS
Aamar Deo Singh, Senior Vice President of Research at Angel One, emphasized that TCS’s strong results signal a recovery phase for the IT sector. He noted that the recent revenue miss by OpenAI has inadvertently acted as a catalyst for renewed interest in IT stocks, particularly TCS, which is now seen as an attractive long-term investment opportunity due to its current valuations.
However, some analysts caution that TCS’s margins may remain under pressure due to ongoing investments in artificial intelligence (AI), partnerships, and acquisitions aimed at driving future growth. ICICI Securities has issued a ‘reduce’ rating on TCS, setting a target price of ₹1,920 per share, reflecting concerns about the sustainability of its recent performance.
Market Outlook and Analyst Ratings
Despite the mixed sentiments, TCS has garnered significant analyst support, with 29 analysts recommending a ‘buy’, 13 suggesting to ‘hold’, and six advising to ‘sell’. The average target price among analysts stands at ₹2,345.24, indicating a potential upside of 8.8% from its recent close.
Regulatory Challenges Looming
Adding to the complexities, the U.S. government recently suspended several Indian IT firms, including TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and HCLTech, from the Permanent Labor Certification Program (PERM). This program is crucial for companies seeking to sponsor green card applications for H-1B visa workers, potentially impacting their ability to attract and retain talent in the competitive tech landscape.
